Is it better to shower in the morning or at night?
BBC ^ | Sept 21, 2025 | Jasmin Fox-Skelly

Some people prefer to shower in the morning, others in the evening. Who is doing it the right way?

In this increasingly polarised world we live in, there is one question that perhaps divides us more than any other – do you shower first thing in the morning, or last thing at night? Or perhaps you are one of the 34% of the American population who do not shower daily.

Whichever camp you belong to, you may wonder what impact your choice has on your health.

...unless one gets dirty/sweaty on a daily basis.

I live in Texas. Yes.

And how many hours apart is that?

And what about people that work the night shift so their morning is really their nightime.

“Coming from the BBC, this surprised me. I though the Brits didn’t shower.”
“That’s the French.”

Yeah, the French. If it were the British, the question would have been “is it better to brush and floss my teeth in the spring or in the fall?”

Europeans, in general, don’t shower.

I was raised in South Florida. You showered at least once a day.

From early May to early October we were in the swimming pool just about every day, so once a day was fine. October to May it was still hot enough to sweat - a lot - but just cool enough to make swimming uncomfortable. Twice a day showers were common.

Then we moved out to New Mexico. You just don’t sweat as much here. I was shocked when, not long after I got my first job out here, a coworker shared that she only showered two or three times a week. I was grossed out, but years later, I can see it.

I would say it depends on where you’re headed. If you’re going to someplace cleaner than you are, shower before you go. If you’re going to someplace dirtier than you are, shower when you get back home.
Or take two showers.

The article says it’s more important to change your bed linens frequently (???) than worry about when you shower. That’s where the grime and germs accumulate.

Yes, and get rid of your wall-to-wall carpeting. If it's more than two or three days old, you're basically stepping on dirty laundry. If dust emitted light, you'd be horrified to see what you're bringing up with each step you take.

I think that might be surprisingly common among that group. The Mrs and her coworkers have a tendency to do that.

Morning because they are in almost intimate proximity, afternoons because some types of hair penetrate the skin and eventually cause cysts that need surgery if not removed quickly, and third time right before bed for some combination of “relaxing”, “keeps bed clean”, and “cant be stinky” from the day.

She taught the girls to do that. The amount of dirty towels they generate is crazy.

ME? Well Im like everyone else. Once in the spring when the ice goes out and once in the fall before the ice comes back weather I need it or not.

"Because if you're going to bed showered but leaving those bed sheets for a month, then that is going to accumulate bacteria, dirt and dust mites."

A MONTH?!

As a young single male, how many people have a second set of sheets? I'd guess the average young single male changes/washes the bedsheets once a year, assuming no spills or obvious needs-a-cleaning mess incidents.

The question that divides us most, is which way to hang toilet paper.

Not much of a division when the options are "down-in-front" and "wrong".

Be nice to your coworkers. Shower in the morning.

If you're getting that nasty and sweaty overnight, maybe you should buy a lighter blanket or upgrade your AC unit...

I’ve always had very oily skin (great for keeping supple, wrinkle-free skin.) I’ve gone a few weeks without changing sheets and the oil stains them horribly, NOTHING gets them out. And no, I don’t like dark sheet to hide the stains.

Man survived thousands of years just fine with sponge baths. Much written about showering daily in chlorinated water, chlorine is a known cancer causing chemical.

And yet, life expectancy has increased by 11 year (16.5%) from 1950 to 2025. I'll stick with the daily showers and chlorinated water.

Once in the morning before work and once after work you heathens!!

The warm air blows across France from the Mediterranean sea.
The French are known not to bath on a regular basis.
The Germans can smell the French on warm days.
This has always bothered the Germans.

If you look closely at photos of the beginning of WW1 and WW2, you will see German soldiers marching into France with a rifle in one hand and a bar of soap in the other......
