American says there's 'no excuse' for her comments, promises to 'be better' after backlash
American tennis star Taylor Townsend has apologized "from the bottom of my heart" for making disparaging comments about Chinese food.
"I just truly wanted to apologize. There's no excuse, there are no words. And for me, I just, I will be better," she said on Instagram.
The 29-year-old, who is ranked world No. 1 in doubles, is in China for the 2025 Billie Jean King Cup Finals.
She recently posted videos of local dishes including bullfrogs and turtles on Wednesday. She joked she would need to "talk to HR" about the quality of the food.
But after facing a backlash online, Townsend took to Instagram again Wednesday to apologize.
"I just wanted to come on here and apologize sincerely from the bottom of my heart," said Townsend, who said she understood how privileged she is as a professional athlete to be able to travel around the world and experience cultural differences.
"(It's) one of the things that I love so much about what I do, and I have had nothing but the most amazing experience in time here and the tournament," Townsend said. "Everyone has been so kind and so gracious. And the things that I said were not representative of that at all."
Last month at the U.S. Open, Townsend got into a dispute with Jelena Ostapenko. She said the Latvian player told her she had "no education, no class" after their second-round match, which Townsend won...
Has she been to the French Open yet?.................
That crap is only considered a “delicacy” now for them to save face and save some money. Not too long ago, they had to eat that or starve and got used to it. They eat anything with DNA.
She seems nice.

As Dad would say...That ain’t food. That is what my food eats.

Sounds like just another angry black woman that’s always got a grievance to me.
She’s right this time but so is a stopped clock twice a day. She should keep her mouth shut and learn how to be diplomatic when overseas. Tennis is not a ghetto sport.

OMG! she triggered some someone where over the great wall of china internet wall where the Uyghurs frolic in concentration camps where their organs are harvested by the ccp. But we will not pay any attention to that.
It is hard when a protected class member runs into political correctness.
:-P
Stupid American leftist virtue-signaling
YES - Chinese eat turtles, frogs, and a lot of other stuff. It’s always more expensive and considered a delicacy.
If one tried to explain the “racial” or social-justice aspects of this particular case to a Chinese, they would be dumbfounded and wouldn’t have a clue what one was talking about.
Can anyone just criticize something and instead of caving into the backlash, stick to their guns and say “That’s just how I feel.” Taste in food is so subjective, surely we shouldn’t have to apologize for that.
THAT requires an apology these days?!?!? Good gravy, Redd Foxx and Andrew Dice Clay and anyone else might actually cause heart attacks in these soft fools these days. Did someone "get the vapors" and wave their hand at their own face to cool off, after hearing "I need to talk to HR about the quality of the food"?!?!?
Growing up, frog legs were common on a menu and people making snapping turtle soup was not uncommon for outdoorsy people. People lead too sheltered of a life.
She prefers boiled chitin’s.
Oh, brother. Criticizing Chinese food is what gets some people’s lacy undies in a bundle???
What’s there to apologize for? If she doesn’t like Chinese food, then she doesn’t like Chinese food.
I don’t know whether it’s good or bad. But Trump follows Gibbs’ Rule #6. Not everyone does.
“Never say you’re sorry; it’s a sign of weakness.”
