With six stitches across his cheek, Richard Catrone’s face was still bloodied and bandaged when he spoke to NBC New York. The 67-year-old is in pain, but thankful he was not more seriously hurt when his neighbor fired a flare gun in his face.
The attack was captured on home security video. It shows Catrone walking his dog on a leash outside his apartment when 76-year-old Kathleen Schuman comes out of her apartment, a few doors down. Seconds later she fires the flare gun, hitting him in the face. The flare can be seen bouncing off his cheek as he holds his face in pain, shocked by what just happened. (snip)
Police arrested Schuman and charged her with assault. When NBC New York spoke to Catrone, his blood was still on the walkway in front of their apartments.
Neighbors of the two residents say the two have a longstanding feud, stemming from their pets. Schuman has a house cat and Catrone has a dog. (snip)
In court, Schuman pleaded not guilty. She has to stay away from Catrone as part of her release. The judge allowed her to return to the apartment one time with an officer to retrieve her belongings and her attorney told the judge she would live temporarily with a relative.
"I’ve lived in Manhattan. I’ve lived in San Francisco. I’ve lived in Boston and nothing ever happened to me," said Catrone. "I moved to Suffolk County, a senior community, and my neighbor shoots me in the face with a flare."

Was she going for a baseball at a Phillies game?
I’m a conservative cat lady. Only have one cat now.
But seveeral years ago, I lived in a house on a fenced-in acre and had two cats and a dog. They all got along just fine. And I didn’t have to train them to do that.
With both sides claiming to be the Good side.
Hopefully she and none of her cats get to sit in a cell for a year or so contemplating how this was not a good idea.
When tensions like that flare up, it’s a signal for help.
Hopefully, since she can not seem to do that, she will be put some place that will lower the likelihood of her doing this again.
Oh yes, but she was the one who shot him.
Now if he was coming toward her and shouting that he was going to wring her neck or something, justified.
Otherwise, you are not allowed to shoot your neighbors just because they are whiny jerks.
Pet feuds are all too common. It’s kind of crazy that one would devolve into a shooting with a flare gun but not surprising either. I adopted a Belgian Malinois puppy 6 months ago and walk him throughout my and adjacent neighborhoods every evening. I’m conscious of the fact that at 8 months and already 75 pounds, he is intimidating. He is well trained and walks (leashed) on my side. He does alert to other dogs, cats, rabbits, squirrels, etc., but does not growl, bark, or lunge. During our walks we encounter many other dogs and there are no issues. However, there has not been a week go by where we didn’t come across at least one situation with some “Karen” who scoops up their designer dog du-jour, and in some cases admonishes me for having what they deem a “dangerous dog.” I ignore them and continue on my way. This seems to infuriate them because they feel they are owed some response. Yesterday I had one follow me 2 blocks taking pictures, saying she was documenting my dog and I to post on some neighborhood app to warn others of a “dangerous” dog and it’s “irresponsible” owner.
Does Long Island or New York State require a FGOID in order to own and operate a Flare Gun?
Non egg producing woman with hormone problems.
“Yesterday I had one follow me 2 blocks taking pictures...”
Unbelievable. I think ignoring them is a good idea. They are the sort of people who are spoiling for a fight - probably because they are lacking something in their lives.
