Complaint filed against teacher over 2023 incident
During the meeting, the mother — who identified herself as Crystal Marull — said that her son was targeted by a teacher at Gainesville High School.
“My older son’s history teacher allowed students to label him a ‘Naziphile’ simply for his interest in history and participation in ROTC,” she said. “She later nominated my son for ‘Most Likely to Become a Dictator’ and had his classmates vote on it and try to force him to the front of the class to receive the certificate, which he rightly refused.”
While Marull testified before the board, she held up the certificate, which read “Ms. Watts’ Class Superlatives 2023.”
“All because of his conservative values and our perspectives,” she finished.
Footage of her testimony went viral, and Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier took to social media to weigh in on the issue.
“If these facts bear out, then this teacher should be immediately terminated and never allowed to teach again in Florida,” he wrote. “Parents and students in Alachua deserve better.”
Uthmeier wrote a letter to the Alachua County School Board, lecturing that teachers are prohibited from harassing students on the basis of their political beliefs.
“This teacher violated Florida law, the School Board’s policy, and no less than six ethical principles,” the letter reads. “Her teacher’s certificate must be revoked.”
Florida Commissioner of Education Anastasios Kamoutsas also revealed on Thursday evening that he’d investigated the issue, identifying the teacher as Lauren Watts.
“I found probable cause and will take every necessary action to ensure this teacher never teaches again,” he said.
Kamoutsas released an administrative complaint aimed at Watts, which listed out several rule violations, including the following:
*Gross immorality or an act of moral turpitude *Personal conduct that seriously reduces a person’s effectiveness as an employee of the district *Violating the BOE’s Principles of Professional Conduct *Failing to make a reasonable effort to protect a student from conditions harmful to learning and/or to the student’s mental health *Intentionally exposing a student to unnecessary embarrassment or disparagement *Harassing or discriminating against a student on the basis of political beliefs
Failing to take reasonable precautions to distinguish between personal views and those of any educational institution or organization with which the individual is affiliated
The complaint was filed with the Education Practices Commission, which Kamoutsas urged to sanction Watts.
According to the complaint, such a sanction could involve a written reprimand, probation, a fine, suspension, revocation of her educator’s certificate, or even a combination thereof.
No additional information about the incident has been provided at this time.

Where are the ROTC leaders on this. Where is the school administration on it
It’s coercing minors to be a mob
It is very bad
This infuriates me. I am a Florida teacher who has worked her a$$ off trying to get certified.
See, I wanted to be a teacher as a kid, parents refused because they were afraid of left wing indoctrination in the teaching programs. Further, since I had a talent with writing, they insisted I study Creative Writing instead (yeah, no left wing indoctrination in the arts, Mom and Dad...)
I have had interview after interview. I’m a certified ELA teacher — and I can’t get a teaching job in 6-12 to save my danged life... my real goal was to teach ESE but on the adivce of a psychic (my parents were idiots) who said I’d be a famous writer — they insisted on the arts if they were paying. Great return on their investment... did I say they were idiots?
Anyway... I know how to behave. I have never treated students like this... and yet... I search and search like Snoopy... only to see the signs saying, “No dogs allowed...”
And this crazy broad has a job...
If this is from 2023, why is it just now hitting the news?
Keep trying! Great teachers make a difference!
(BTW, are you a Weeki Wachee girl? I always thought they were so cool.)
The national is short hundreds of thousands of teachers. I’m surprised at your lack of success.
They’re going for DEI types. Clearly, Mermaid Girl isn’t DEI.
I was employed as a teacher for 2 yrs, then told I wouldn’t be renewed. The real reason for not being renewed, I told my department head, who was having affairs with multiple teachers in the school, and students reported comments between him and one of the teachers, a subordinate teacher who they let go, not him, that if he was in industry they would have walked him out the door on day one. He didn’t like me telling him the truth. I didn’t mind getting out of there, because if the principal was condoning his behavior, it was just f’d up. And lets not even get started on the teachers union.
Here’s a little bit of updating to the story.

We need a purge of Democrats from all institutions.
As that is getting them no where they are now becoming more vocal.
For a long time we were taught not to assume malice because it was usually just stupidity.
When dealing with the schools and especially when dealing with CPS, assume malice right from the start and respond accordingly. Get your story out and loud. Lawyer up. Record EVERYTHING.
They are not playing.
We should not be playing either.
“We need a purge of Democrats from all institutions.”
Agreed, see tagline!
I see, this was all in good fun. You’re going to grow up to be Hitler, hardy-har-har.
This is straight-up abusive behavior, and the teacher made up her own little mob to help her.
