On seeing two hijabs at the supermarket

One of my struggles as a self-declared decent person is the tug between my intellectual abhorrence of Islam and my response at a personal level when I see Muslim women walking about with their hair hidden under hijabs. I would never insult or belittle such women to their faces, and I would treat them with courtesy and respect.

But I can’t help but think that at some point, there might be so many hijabs walking around that we stand in real danger of being forced to submit to sharia law. We would have to look the other way as Islam’s indignities are visited upon women, gays, Christians, and Jews.

Those were my thoughts yesterday at the supermarket. A mother and her preteen daughter, both wearing very handsome hijabs, were shopping there. The daughter was chattering happily to her mom, who was very attentive to the girl. In all, it was a sweet scene of familial love and affection. Only the hardest of hearts could disparage it.

But immediately accompanying those benign thoughts were images of what’s happening in Europe and the U.K., and what is now happening in isolated spots (Hamtramck) in the U.S.: Muslim immigrants who see no need to assimilate into the Western cultures they actually despise and whose laws they refuse to recognize or obey.

(They are not like the Amish, another religious sect, who once chose to disobey certain “English” laws such as compulsory public education but did not resist them in a violent or contemptuous manner.)

Then my mind reeled back to Jefferson’s statement about a fundamental aspect of the American belief in freedom of religion: “But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.”

That’s because it is more of a culture than a religion. Muslims are the least religious of the faiths. We have two mosques locally and they complain about MINOs. A Saudi student built a religious school here and it folded almost immediately and became a FourSquare Christian retreat.
I had a boss who was Muslim and his favorite food was a bacon cheeseburger but he wouldn’t eat one in front of his parents.

The author doesn’t mention his reaction to seeing Orthodox Jewish women who also need to cover their hair

And comes with complete different connotation/vibe than an Orthodox Jew or even Amish because we know they are observing God in a way that will not be forced or even evangelized upon anyone else. Islam converts by the sword.

Those were my thoughts yesterday at the supermarket.

Had a similar experience today at the Manfred Rommel Airport (Stuttgart). Passed by a fancy coffee boutique, and saw that the cashier was a Muslim woman wearing a very distinctive hijab. It was quite neat and tidy, and was largely in brown and black - actually quite appropriate for a shop selling coffee. But it did catch my attention.

(Of course, one can encounter plenty of such hijabs when simply strolling down the Königstraße in Stuttgart - but then the women are usually trailing behind a husband, loaded with parcels like pack mules, their gaze directed at the earth, etc. But this woman was in a service role, and would presumably be expected by her employers to interact with customers, engage in shoptalk about coffee, etc.)

Still, I didn't go in.

(I mentioned to my wife that it wouldn't have bothered me if the woman had been a habited Catholic nun, but my wife countered that a nun would not be attempting to impose her worldview upon the rest of society and/or wearing garb implicitly advocating the subjugation of women.)

Good ideas from the author but the forward operating base camps (mosques) need to be examined too. The language-NO BORDERS-culture collective is EVILand has/will be a threat to all other civilizations. Witness history. Witness current events.

There is a huge difference between Islam and other religions. Only in Islam, their holy book Koran clearly states that ALL non-muslims must be converted to Islam. If they refuse, they should be killed or forced to pay slavery tax.
