Had a similar experience today at the Manfred Rommel Airport (Stuttgart). Passed by a fancy coffee boutique, and saw that the cashier was a Muslim woman wearing a very distinctive hijab. It was quite neat and tidy, and was largely in brown and black - actually quite appropriate for a shop selling coffee. But it did catch my attention.
(Of course, one can encounter plenty of such hijabs when simply strolling down the Königstraße in Stuttgart - but then the women are usually trailing behind a husband, loaded with parcels like pack mules, their gaze directed at the earth, etc. But this woman was in a service role, and would presumably be expected by her employers to interact with customers, engage in shoptalk about coffee, etc.)
Still, I didn't go in.
(I mentioned to my wife that it wouldn't have bothered me if the woman had been a habited Catholic nun, but my wife countered that a nun would not be attempting to impose her worldview upon the rest of society and/or wearing garb implicitly advocating the subjugation of women.)
