A single artificially sweetened soft drink daily may increase diabetes risk by more than a third
Medical Xpress / Monash University / Diabetes & Metabolism ^ | July 30, 2025 | Robel Hussen Kabthymer et al

A study has found that drinking just one can of artificially-sweetened soft drink a day may increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 38%.

Surprisingly, that risk for artificially sweetened soft drink is even higher than for those who consume sugar-sweetened beverages, such as regular soft drinks, where the risk was found to be 23% higher.

The research followed more than 36,000 Australian adults over nearly 14 years.

The study—led by Professor Barbora de Courten, Associate Professor Allison Hodge, and Ph.D. student Robel Hussen Kabthymer—adds to growing global concern about the health effects of both sugary and artificially sweetened drinks.

"Drinking one or more of these beverages each day—whether sweetened with sugar or artificial substitutes—was linked to a significantly higher chance of developing type 2 diabetes," said Hussen Kabthymer.

Professor de Courten, said the findings challenge the common assumption that artificially-sweetened beverages are a safer choice.

"Artificial sweeteners are often recommended to people at risk of diabetes as a healthier alternative, but our results suggest they may pose their own health risks," she said.

While the link between sugary drinks and diabetes could largely be explained by obesity, the connection between artificially-sweetened drinks and type 2 diabetes remained strong even after adjusting for body weight, suggesting a potentially direct effect on metabolism.

The study analyzed data from the long-running Melbourne Collaborative Cohort Study, also known as Health 2020, involving participants aged 40–69 years, and adjusted for diet, exercise, education, and health history.

“All artificial sweeteners cause cancer in lab animals.”

As does almost everything else, especially in boxcar quantities.

Have you tried Monkfruit? All natural, no calories, no glucose spike, no aftertaste. I use the powdered stuff, takes 1/16 of a tsp to sweeten a cup of tea. Not sure what size that container they’re using is, mine is a 5 oz container (little thing) and not even half gone, using it once or twice a day since April. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D8MY635N?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_1&th=1

Good question! Pineapple juice has 25 grams of carbs, whereas Zero soda has, well, zero, so ..., good question, for sure.

You have to adjust for carbohydrate intake.
Most people drink diet sodas as if it allows them to injest carbs. In fact they’re worse off doing this.

This is a classic example of the left not being able to distinguish between causation and correlation People like me whom drank 8-10 Dr Peppers a day until we are diabetic doesn’t mean my now diet Dr Pepper caused my diabetes. Those are just fewer carbs I get in a day now,

It is more GARBAGE “science”!

Personally, I’ve drunk multiple diet sodas every day for decades. Did yo-yo diets to keep my weight in check UNTIL I switched to Keto. With Keto and IF, I lost the weight and kept it off. For 7 years - while drinking over a 6-pack of diet soda every day.

Do people eating lots of carbs have a greater chance of obesity and diabetes? YES. It is almost impossible to reduce the amount of fat one eats without increasing the amount of carbs eaten. There are only carbs, proteins and fat. Most people WILL eat 15-20% fat if possible. Therefor most people will eat 80-85% of “carbs plus fat”. Cutting fat will result in increasing carbs. There is nothing else to increase.

People gaining weight or fighting weight for years often start drinking diet soda? YES! That is why I started drinking them.

So will people with a tendency to become diabetic DUE TO SIMPLE CARBS tend to also begin and then drink more diet soda than the healthier population? OF COURSE!

But do wet sidewalks cause rain? Or does RAIN cause wet sidewalks? Which comes first?

There population studies are very easy and cheap to do, but usually have no way to find the answer to the critical question.

GARBAGE “SCIENCE”.

Tea. 🤮 The idea is to drink something that tastes good to you.

I like the fizz of diet pop more than the taste.

I like the taste of black coffee.

Do they have carbonated coffee?

Both the artificial sweeteners and high fructose corn syrup in soft drinks are best to be avoided for lots of reasons. I have limited my fluid intact to almost exclusively water with an occasional unsweetened iced tea and a single daily cup of morning coffee. I used to enjoy an occasional soft drink, but that has become a rarity. I will however try Coke when it is again made with cane sugar, but expect to be disappointed that it will not be the same flavor I remember as a kid.

I am thinking that the “Big fat Honkers” drink Diet sodas, as their “sigil” or “crucifix” against obesity. It says nothing about the physically active, and normal body weight persons proclivity to consume Diet Coke.

Another reason studies will be skewed, those who have Type 2 diabetes and switch to Diet drinks in place of Sugary sodas and Juices.

I drink around 4 DC’s a day, somedays I have been known to empty a six pack if it is hot. I figure it is better than beer by far.

DEFINITELY - the carbs in beer is far worse for you.
