Parents Abandon Son, 10, at Airport to Catch Flight After His Passport Expired’

A couple abandoned their 10-year-old son at Barcelona Airport to catch their flight after realising his passport had expired, a worker at the terminal has said.

The parents allegedly ditched their kid at Barcelona’s El Prat international airport on Wednesday so they could board the plane on time.

However the boy was discovered alone as he waited for a relative to pick him up and the police were called, the air traffic coordinator, called Lilian, claimed.

The airport staff member posted a video, which has wracked up over 300,000 views, telling the story and condemning the parents.

The child had been barred from flying because his passport had expired and did not have a visa.

So the couple were said to have arranged for a family member to pick him up as they went on their way to the plane.

However when airport staff then found the kid on his own the police were informed of what had allegedly happened.

‘He told them that his parents were on the plane on their way to their home country, going on vacation’, said the air traffic controller, whose claims have not been verified.

The plane, which at this point was moments from take off, then had to return to the stand, where it was met by police.

The pilot then allegedly asked passengers ‘if someone had left a child in the terminal and no one had answered.’

The couple were eventually found and hauled to the airport’s police station where their son was. It is unclear if they were arrested.

The TikToker said: ‘I’m an air traffic controller, and as a controller, I’ve seen a lot of things, but this has been completely surreal’, the TikToker went on to say.

Of all the places you could be ditched, Barcelona is not too bad.

It doesn’t say what country they were from, just that they were in Spain. Why couldn’t they have gone to their country’s embassy, and gotten a temporary extension on the passport? Can they do that sort of thing? And why was the kid allowed to travel on a passport that was about to expire? Shouldn’t the parents have been asked how long they were going to be out of the country before they boarded the plane to go to Spain?

>>I flew across country when I was in first grade. But I suppose every child is not up to it, maybe some that are teenagers aren’t.

My first ride on a bus alone was to high school, 16 blocks away. And I’m sure the family was totally panicked. Raised by VERY protective grandparents. Awestruck by your adventure.

waited for a relative

My Mexican-American wife and kids (Mexico says dual citizens) tried to board the plane back to Chicago. They let my wife, but not our kids, board the plane. Luckily the “relative” was close by and no long wait required.

I flew down to Mexico and brought them back.

Trump refers to Non-Tariff restrictions. This is one of them. Both others and I speculate it has to do with corruption. If my wife had passed the right amount of money the “Mexican law” would not be enforced.

Many Mexican laws exist for the sole purpose of facilitating a bribe.

(Of course Chicago Building and Zoning Codes are not designed to solicit bribes....no! Congressmen do not introduce Fethcer-Bills for the purpose of generating donations to kill the bill after the PR buzz. The US is not like Mexico.)

I flew across country when I was in first grade.
= = =

Were your arms tired??

OK, sorry ...

That triggers some thoughts for me.

Was I able to do that at age 6? I did walk to the bus stop and ride to school.

I will be meditating on that age of my past.

How the parents handled all the travel arrangements and their own passports and visas, while, the whole time, never noticing their child’s passport had expired? I don’t think THAT was possible. I think they knew, before going to the airport, what was going to happen, and just lied to the kid, springing the situation on him at the last minute at the airport. Lousy parents.

When I was five years it was “go ou and play. Be back in time for dinner. I was always atracted to swamps and from then till 10 I spent a lot of time in nearby swampy areas floating on logs and making “forts.” In Istanbul at 7-9 My 1 year younger sister and I went exploring for blocks around. If we looked lost or out of place a taxi driver or soldiers in a jeep would pick us up and call the consulate to ask where we might belong and gave us a ride home. Those were safer days. Any more that would be highly inadvisable in any Mohammedann country including anywhere in Western Europe.

I agree with you about the parents. But I question the officials decision. They knew it was the child in question, belonging to these parents. What purpose was served by keeping him in Spain?

If you visit Europe, they must be valid for at least 90 days after your arrival. Wonder how the kid got into Spain, unless the family is Spanish.

When a relative was called to get the kid, I’m not really buying “abandoned”

Total envy! I was allowed to go 3, COUNT THEM THREE!, houses away from my porch in either direction.

The result is that I am still traumatized at traveling alone. I used to chair organizations, newsletters, conferences, what have you. I had to go to exec meetings all over the country. I HATED IT! It took everything I had to get into the train compartment and then find the hotel.

While I am deeply grateful for being cherished, I really wish they had also thought about how to build up my independence.

What a glorious childhood you and your sister had.

Any idea why?

Sure, you don't have any need to know.

Next question....

which has wracked up over 300,000 views …

To “wrack” means to cause (someone or something) to suffer pain or damage.

It takes about 10 seconds to look up a definition on the internet.
