Ozzy cortege to make final trip through Birmingham
BBC ^ | July 30, 2025 | Will Jefford Amy Cole

Fans will be given a chance to pay their respects to heavy metal legend Ozzy Osbourne when his cortege travels through his home city of Birmingham.

The Black Sabbath singer's body will be brought back for a procession that will travel along Broad Street in the city centre from 13:00 BST on Wednesday.

The news was revealed by BBC WM presenter Ed James who said a hearse will make its way to the Black Sabbath Bridge and bench where thousands of fans have left messages and floral tributes.

The Lord Mayor of Birmingham Zafar Iqbal said: "We're going to pay our last respects and homage to one of the greatest living legends of Birmingham." Osbourne died aged 76 on 22 July.

Flowers and notes fill the majority of the image, with some reaching the top of tall black railings. Five people are by the tributes. Buildings are in the background at the top of the photo. Thousands of fans have visited the Black Sabbath bench in Birmingham (pictured on Tuesday) His death came less than three weeks since he took part, along with his band mates, in Black Sabbath's farewell gig, Back to the Beginning. Dozens of musicians, including members of Metallica and Aerosmith, performed at the Villa Park concert.

The event, which takes place ahead of a private funeral, will allow his family a chance to see the many memories his loyal fans have left alongside flowers and tributes, the council said.

Local musicians Bostin' Brass will accompany the procession.

Black Sabbath, and the genre they did so much to define, made music that was safe for people who felt like they were outside. Depressed kids, angry kids, socially awkward kids. By the sheer accident of having the primary lyricist (Geezer Butler) being clinically depressed and choose as a band to explore the dark side (which is kind of why the the depressed guy became the primary writer) they made the those who felt alone feel not alone. A constant you hear in 2nd generation and beyond metal acts is “I was suicidal until...”, and many metal fans that did not become have the same story. They found the music, and then they found other fans, and then they were in a community that accepted them for the things that had separated them from people before.

So for a lot of people Ozzy “talked” them out of killing themselves. That’s always going to be someone special. Add in the fact that Ozzy absolutely adored his fans, never stopped being thankful for having fans, and preached that mentality to younger musicians whenever he got that chance.

Be thankful you don’t get it. It means you probably a happier life than most of us who do.

Heh, yeah - Keith Richards *must* have an attic with a Dorian Gray portrait that is basically a skeleton at this point :-)

Back when I was younger - Sabbath, not Ozzy solo - I was a huge fan. Hard for me to wrap my head around the feting he’s getting (and for the record? I think younger Ozzy would have *hated* it, too!)

But, time moves on.

My oldest boy has since moved on to a quite successful normal career and we have a great relationship now.

But, one reason my hat’s off to Ozzy?

Back when he was 14-16 - and we really didn’t get along (not unusual for teenagers and dads), he tinkered in a band and they covered (well, tried to cover. There’s a reason he’s a lawyer now!) a lot of Black Sabbath standards that I remember loving from my youth. Released before *he* was born, but stuff I ate up when I was his age and it was new.

There was a year or two when I think the only time we didn’t argue was when we’d... jam (when he let me)... to old-school Sabbath.

I barely knew my own dad - the only 3 times I met him, he wanted to borrow money and I’ve got nothing good to say about him - and I wanted to be a better dad, but I learned the hard way (like every dad, I guess) that teenagers are *damn hard*.

However, for a year or two? Ozzy was our connection. I’m grateful for that bridge when we could spend time together and not argue or fight and just rip power chords. The rest of that time, I was the stupid old man ruining his life and he was the prodigal son who never listened.

We talked about that just this past weekend. Shared a moment. So whatever other people want to say about Ozzy? We’re both grateful that it was Ozzy that made for a tenuous connection during a brief year or so when nothing else seemed to work.

If they are doing this for Ozzy, I wonder what it will be like when British music icons like Paul, Ringo, or Mick finally pass on. Keith will probably outlive them all.

I can honestly imagine Ian Anderson just wandering off into highlands if he thought his time was up, just to avoid the sort of thing.

Prior to singing with the choir invisible Pete Steele of Type O Negative wrote this

( Yes. Where IS Morrison?)

————

The dead they got that morbid beat it goes, “Deo, Deo”
They dance upon decaying feet with their black toes, woah
Heaven, Limbo and Hell - purgatory
Oh well, oh well
Halloween in Heaven
It’s Christmas in Hell, Hell, Hell
Halloween in Heaven
Oh well, oh well
The devil stole a yule tree
decorated with souls
Jesus trick or treating
as him below
Heaven, Limbo and Hell - purgatory
Oh well, oh well
Halloween in Heaven
It’s Christmas in Hell, Hell, Hell
Halloween in Heaven
Oh well, oh well
Halloween in Heaven
Christmas in Hell
Halloween in Heaven
Oh well, oh well
Bonham on drums, Entwistle on bass, as guest morticians
Bon Scott on vox, Rhoads just for kicks, on guitar Hendrix, hey
Lennon sits in with his friend George but where is Morrison? Hey
Of course I cried
When I heard they’d died
And took a part of me, yeah
Same time gave
From beyond the grave
Became what was to be, yeah
Elvis ain’t dead so he isn’t here
Party never ends
Demon roadies, angel groupies, suicide losers, hey
If only I’d known how cool death is
I’d have killed myself sooner, hey
Of harps and choirs
Pumpkin pine pyres
Flames of red and green, yeah
Orange and black
Years take me back
Christmas or Halloween, yeah
Halloween in Heaven
It’s Christmas in Hell, Hell, Hell
Halloween in Heaven
Oh well, oh well
Halloween in Heaven
Christmas in Hell
Halloween in Heaven
Oh well, oh well
Halloween in Heaven
It’s Christmas in Hell, Hell, Hell
Halloween in Heaven
Oh well, oh well
Halloween in Heaven
Christmas in Hell
Halloween in Heaven
Oh well, oh well
Right on
Wow, wo, wow, wow...
Oh, oh, oh, oh...

I’m not stalking anybody. I don’t even know who you are. There was a post, I replied. If you really really don’t want to read stuff from me SCROLL PAST.

Get over yourself. You really just aren’t important enough for me to remember “don’t post to that clown”. I may, or may not, see something from you weeks from now that I want to reply to, but I won’t remember it’s you. Cause you just aren’t that interesting.
