Everybody was shocked — shocked! — when Stephen Colbert announced this week that CBS canceled “The Late Show.”
The despondent media reacted like a meteor was about to smash into Earth.
But how surprising was Colbert’s kibosh really?
Did peoples’ jaws also hit the floor when Blockbuster Video called it quits in 2014?
Were they muffling their screams when blimps were phased out for air travel in 1937?
“What do you mean ‘no more silent films’?!”
The end of “The Late Show” was every bit as writ-in-stone as any of those predictable downfalls.
And it’s not only Colbert. The Grim Reaper is coming for all of late-night TV. Those comedians in neckties are just ignoring Death’s deafening knock.
The retro programs, which began in the 1950s as an experiment to fill time, have far too tiny a viewership to justify their exorbitant cost anymore.
The Post reported Friday that Colbert’s talk show was losing $40 to $50 million per year. The Times watered down those figures to mere “tens of millions.”
Awfully hard to blame Trump for that.
True, “The Late Show” was beating the competition with 2.42 million nightly viewers on average during the first quarter. But just 9% of those eyeballs were in the 18-49 demo that advertisers covet.
That means no ad dollars because young people couldn’t care less.

Gutfeld and crew were going at it last night. They were “complaining” that they had to work ten times as hard as Colbert’s staff because they only have one tenth the staff to do a their show.
>>loosing” That’s not even a word.
Adventures of Hiram Holliday was way before my time. I haven’t heard of it.
Hiram Holliday was a character from a book. Journalist who traveled the world with someone from his paper who was sent to take care of him. He knew everything about everything and came out with the most incredible information. Every woman he met fell for this nerdy little guy with glasses who was expert at anything he touched. Wonderful comedy.

Thanks for posting. I’ll check it out.
For that reason, I don’t believe the big cable companies will be around in 5 years.
“just 9% of those eyeballs were in the 18-49 demo that advertisers covet.
“That means no ad dollars because young people couldn’t care less.”
Most of the young people should have and probably do have daytime jobs.
The network should fill the transmission lines the best it can. If the revenues met expectations, then the cost side would need to get pruned hard.
YOU…are a BLABBERMOUTH!😁
It was way too cerebral for broadcast television of the era. Don’t get me wrong, I loved it, and love Pat. But there there is reality.
Would have made a great podcast.
I can’t remember the last time I watched a late night TV show. A few years ago I just unplugged my TV and don’t even watch it anymore. But even before that I had long since stopped watching late night TV.
Why we have no TV.
Ever since Obama.
It’s all propaganda.
most of those shows were barely breaking 200,000 in the demo, so yes late night TV is moribund and soon will cease to exist ... they’re not funny and mostly just hard leftist propaganda ...
We live in Arizona. We are in bed by 10 pm (or earlier). What is late night TV?
I never saw the show except for a little of Rush’s night somewhere, like on the internet or something, I was curious to see how many remembered it, I was listening to Rush since his 3rd day of him going national, but I didn’t see any television during those years of the Pat Sajak Show.
Gutfeld is making out in Late Night. Perhaps they should try comedy?
Thank you.
All of you complaining about loosing are wrung!....
Clapping! Humor makes the world run right.
It’s Colbert, he’s as funny as an inflamed hemorrhoid. He and all the other late night(except for Gutfeld) turds are nothing but useless propagandists for the left.
