Who needs kryptonite? Woke Superman reboot is savaged in brutal early reviews
The Daily Mail ^ | 08 Jul 2025 | JASON CHESTER

Usually it's just kryptonite that brings Superman out in a rash, but early reviews of the latest instalment in the long-running film franchise suggest our lycra-clad hero has significantly more to worry about than green crystals.

The new film - directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as the fictional superhero, with Rachel Brosnahan as precocious reporter Lois Lane - will go on general release from July 11.

But while it marks a new chapter in a franchise that began with the iconic Christopher Reeve in Richard Donner's well received 1978 classic Superman: The Movie, a faction of early reviews suggest some critics are already longing for it to end.

One such review, published by the Daily Beast some five days before strict press embargoes had been lifted, didn't hold back in its negative assessment of the film.

In an extensive critique that has since been removed online, the publication condemned Gunn's latest offering as 'the Final Nail in the Grave for the Superhero Genre.'

Moot points include a convoluted, humourless script, poor character development and a plot filled with 'fanciful nonsense that soon renders the entire affair superficial and silly.'

Just as the seemingly indestructible Man of Steel is fatally weakened by kryptonite, so too is the once-unbeatable superhero genre gravely threatened by audience fatigue,' they write.

'Looking ahead rather than focusing on the here and now, this attempt at reimagining DC’s movie series ultimately proves to be more of the same old interconnected-universe bedlam that, at this point, is perilously close to going out of fashion.'

While British star Nicholas Hoult's portrayal of nemesis Lex Luthor wins scant praise from the outlet, leading man Corenswet's portrayal of Superman is dismissed for adhering to a woke checklist of cringeworthy cliches.

So Gunn’s a total pedo...ugh. What happened to old-fashioned values like when people thought Hitchcock was weird for being so fixated on beautiful blonde women?

DC used to make excellent animated movies and shows until they let a flamer take charge of everything ten years or so ago. Now they wonder why sales have dropped off after same-gender kissing scenes, lesbian Bat-Woman and Supergirl’s butch sister on Prime Time.

Maybe the gun, or parts of the gun were made out of kryptonite. You ever think of that? 😉

Let me guess. Superman is now a homosexual space alien, and on his native planet homosexuality is normal. Lois Lane is a lesbian who schools Clark Kent all about the Rainbow agenda. I’ll pass on seeing this woke garbage.

Aquaman lifts a full-sized submarine to the surface of the ocean….

It has to be the water, like when Jack LaLanne towed by swimming, 70 boats on his seventieth bday :^)

Smallville was also good, although I didn’t see it through to the end so I don’t know if it got wokeified later.

...and borderline gay they made the Clark Kent character
Speak for yourself! :)

I never thought that. You'd have to propose the same thing about myriad of 30s-40s-50s actors.

He’s also likely trying to sell the movie to leftists...

Well, they ARE easily duped.

George Reeves/Christopher Reeve Superman portrayed the comic book hero.

Comic book Superman/Spiderman/Thor/Avengers...Archie, whoever, they all did fantastic stuff, crazy stuff, fun stuff to appeal to young teen boys. I know, I used to be one.

So, I’m fine with the movies being true to the comic. Later versions of Spiderman movies are crazy & unwatchable, geared, imo, toward Chinese teens & younger.

“Spiderman movies are crazy & unwatchable”

Agreed...I tried to watch a couple and stopped after less than 5 minutes.

As a kid, the comic book Spiderman was hilarious.
Stan Lee had a hell of a sense of humor.

Spidey was my favorite. I had every issue of the Marvel comics, except for the first 3 Fantastic Four.

I bought them faithfully for several years - even when they *gasp* went to 12 cents. I left home as some do after high school. Later, visiting my old room, I found my cousin had sold them all or something.

By then, I had decided to preserve them as an investment but all were gone.

12 cents
That was just four pop bottles easily found in alleys and construction sites you could return to the store for the deposit.
Find four more, Hostess cupcakes or Twinkies too.

“while it marks a new chapter in a franchise that began with the iconic Christopher Reeve in Richard Donner’s well received 1978 classic Superman: The Movie”

The Superman franchise didn’t begin in 1978. It goes way back, even further than the 1950’s George Reeve series. Even the theme song used in this latest movie is the same as the one used in the old Bud Collier radio program from the 1940’s.

Early 1940s; Max Fleischer animation studios (Betty Boop, etc.) brought Superman to the screen with meticulous quality, experimental Rotoscope technology and stress on being true to the comic book character - who was still new at that time.

They bet everything on it's success and it paid off; quickly becoming as popular as the movies they played before. While a bit dated by today's standards they still hold their own as worthwhile wholesome entertainment.

This thing has looked bad since the first trailer dropped.

DC just can’t help but screw itself every single time.

With the first Wonder Woman movie they looked like they had finally gotten something right.. then WW84 they just wrecked it to hell.

Someone needs to wrestle DC away from WB, and clean house.

Sadly I don’t see it happening
