You post wonderful pix!
coffed = coffee
I could try that with the Opo next year. Or maybe even yet this year, if I could just get any more to germinate! It may be too warm for that, even in our house? (It’s usu. ~ 78-80 deg. F inside. I run just enough AC to keep the humidity down and the temps in the bedrooms around 78 deg. F.)
That is, I could try running the vine back to the ground and then in sort of a sideways “S” along wire fencing or even a thin polyester* rope stretched between 2 tall stakes.
*For UV resistance. Polypropylene will break down in sunlight pretty quickly. :-(
I live in the woods next to a National Forest in deer country but for some reason, they've never bothered my garden. I think they know every house has guns and the occupants like to eat deer.
Bigger problem can be described by a T-shirt I saw a guy wearing the other day - had a pic of a buck and said; Nice truck ya got there. Be a shame if I ran into it.
What about using Cayenne Pepper as a deterrent? Or is there some other pepper that grows that large and is even hotter?
Your local Menards (if you have one) may have Coleus canina Hybrid plants on sale. However, the efficacy of this plant is unproven, so far as I can tell. It might be interesting to have a few FReeper gardeners give them a try in a (non-critical) particular spot, and see what happens. I’m giving it a whirl... :-)
Yes, if you let them go they will more than likely self-seed. I leave a few of mine go for just that reason, then I usually have a flat of FREE seedlings to plant again in the fall. (Zone 5)
As soon as you see tall stems on lettuce, it has bolted and is bitter and is getting ready to flower.
If it’s way hot in your fall zone, there are heat-resistant lettuces, so those and shade might give you another lettuce crop. (All salad greens, really).
ALWAYS jealous of your Plumeria. That scent! Yum!
Your Holiday decor is fun, as always. :)
Sounds like a great time! :)
Impressive tomato production! Find out what varieties he grows, Please! That Salsa sounds really good!
I add lime to my cooked Salsa, too. I CHEAT and use Mrs. Wages’ Salsa mix for the seasonings; I use a combo of tomatoes and chopped sweet peppers.
I also add canned, rinsed & drained black beans and thawed frozen corn to my Salsa. Makes it a bit chunkier and it goes further because we go through a LOT of Salsa around here!
You can get Mrs. Wages mixes at Walmart, Menard’s, Farm & Fleet or Amaz0n.
They don’t seem to be interested in tulips of the tulips are plants in the midst of a daffodil bed.
I’ve had mine planted that was and deer will not eat daffodils.
Although, come to think of it, I don’t remember seeing the tulips this year....... hmmmm.....
I’ve heard that deer will browse maples so if you’re trying to start some saplings, it might be good to protect them.
I did that with some maple saplings I started around our property, which is replete with deer.
So excited to see what you MacGyver for the doors. Our ‘hoop house’ at Jung’s was very much like yours, though filled with waist-high benches to hold higher-end product and rails for hanging baskets in the spring and then we set it up for greenery and fresh-made wreaths at Christmastime. I loved that Hoop House!
I walked into my greenhouse yesterday and there was a Chipmunk sitting on the bench. He saw me, did a double-take and I SWEAR he said, ‘EEEKK!’ and scurried away, LOL! Wish they weren’t so cute. It’s the only thing that keeps me from doing them bodily harm.
So far one cat and the Beagle have taken out two of them, but that’s a drop in the bucket.
Thanks to you, too. My Mom is 88 this Fall and is the Energizer Bunny, for the most part. This past year she’s slowed down to an everyday RUN, versus her usual break-neck speed.
I talked to her today as she wants to come out to the farm and stay for a few days. She has just FOUR DAYS that are not filled in on her calendar yet!
She exhausts me. ;)
I had my gorgeous, brililant red General Eisenhower tulips planted in a row behind my numerous daffodils, with a wall behind that; but they were all destroyed but one, and the bud gets eaten off that one even if it dares to form a bud.
On the other hand, I did not then have a camera to determine whether it was the deer eating the tops or the rabbits digging up the bulbs. Did not see evidence of digging. I still miss them!
Both the Frizbee and the glowing hands look like fun! My kid used to be really into ‘golf’ that you play with Frizbees on a regular course - forget what it’s called. Frizbee Golf? LOL! He loved it when they would have night games with the glowing saucers.
We will probably do a Menard’s Run later this week before Beau heads up to our cabin for Bear Training Camp. I’m doing the Grocery Run for general supplies, tomorrow.
My maple is a Japanese dwarf, and when I planted it as a baby a littile over one ft tall, I made a small hoop fence out of white PVC 1/2” pipe to protect it, mainly from dogs! Now it is around 6 feet tall.
Soil temperature of 98 frikkin degrees WAS the germination problem. Most of what I re-sowed has popped up.
Got a half a dozen shishito ready to pick. A Rutger’s tomato turning color. Squash is a foot tall.
Fridge has been moved to the tunnel. Gotta drill a hole in the bottom for the network cable and 12 vdc power to go into it.
Broke for lunch but heading back out to do that and get things rewired and I’m bringing my shop fan with me cuz it’s warm. That and an old RV stereo that will get installed inside the fridge. I’ve got an old pair of outdoor speakers too.
Here’s a video of where to find the larvae of the Squash Vine Borer. About 10 minutes.
Also - ICK! LOL!

Quality is poor, but you’ll get the gist of it.
<>My oleanders have been viciously attacked by caterpillars.<>
Years ago, white flies killed my 25 feet tall red oleanders.
North FL.
They were so beautiful.
