Deadly I-20 crash in Kaufman County

What we know:

The crash happened around 2:40 p.m. in the westbound lanes of I-20, just east of Hiram Road.

A total of three 18-wheelers and four passenger cars were involved in the crash.

Texas DPS says the driver of one of the 18-wheelers fell asleep behind the wheel and slammed into multiple other vehicles.

The 18-wheeler first hit an F-150 carrying five people, before crashing into two other 18-wheelers. One of the semis jack-knifed and struck a Jeep Compass, Ford Mustang and a Honda passenger vehicle.

Five people were killed in the crash and several others were injured.

At least one is said to be in critical condition.

Drivers need to get sleep to be safe, but the way it is designed makes absolutely no sense and actually works against safety.

I know someone who wrote their entire Ph.D. dissertation on this topic. Government regulations often force drivers onto the roads at times and in patterns that conflict with the body’s natural rhythms.

Jason R. Anderson, "An Examination of Commercial Motor Vehicle Hours of Service Safety Regulation." He shows how government rules can actually push drivers into more dangerous, fatigue-inducing schedules. You can find it here: https://scholar.afit.edu/etd/263

I have read that hyphenated last names frequently indicate illegal aliens in the latin population.

“As long as you have controlled problems like diabetes, you will pass the medical.”

Not necessarily ... I have a Ram 4500 and originally went to get a Medical Card as a courtesy for when I have to pull into a Way Station even though I have “Not for Hire” on the truck.
I had my card for a few years, but when I went for my DOT Physical I think back in 2013 or 14, a new rule was that if your neck was greater than 18” you had to have a Sleep Apnea test. My neck was 18 1/4” and the doc would not give me the card unless I did the test (costs thousands of dollars for a one or two night stay in hospital for observation).
I didn't have that money, so I dropped it. Don't really need it, but it was a nice to have.

Being that fat he’s been forced to take a sleep study and I can pretty much guarantee he’s got apnea.

Means monitored cpap use.

He could very well be tired but not due to hours of service mandate

Yep, absolutely. As a commercial driver I have been there and done that. Far too many times you are wide awake and good to drive but HOS forces you to park and claim berth time but you can’t sleep.

About the time you start to feel tired and might get some sleep it is time to log back on duty again if you ever want to actually get there with the load on time. But there are also other factors caused by companies if you are not an independent.

Dispatchers being the biggest company related problem that causes unneeded stress and lack of sleep. To them you are a robot on a video game that never has to deal with real life challenges out there driving or have a personal life. I have seen dispatchers decide they don’t like a driver and purposely make their life hell.

I have seen them purposely stick them 500 miles from home for their 34hr reset and never let them get home. So the driver has to park the truck and rent a car then drive all the way home to deal with normal personal life responsibilities. Causing them to need to drive a 1000 mile round trip while they actually supposed to be getting rest for 34 hours.

So between the two it is a wonder there are not more cases like this. And there are a lot more than reported it is so common. A 150 mile stretch of interstate can have an average of 5 truck wrecks or more a week. Almost all of them because the driver fell asleep.

I would - the levels of stupidity some of the industry gets to would surprise you. Been driving for 30+ years and I am continually amazed at how irresponsible some of the truck drivers are.

Agreed. As I wrote on a previous thread, he was almost surely TEXTING. They’re supposed to lose their CDLs for this, but I observe truckers texting routinely on I-20 and I-30. They exhibit much the same behavior as drunks if they’re sending, and much the same behavior as Coke and Meth heads if they’re receiving.

Law enforcement just sweeps it under the rug, but it’s a killer pandemic everywhere, not just with illegals.

Is that a [very fat] mehican, or mooslim?

I’m sure other FReepers traveling our highways - having frequented many truck stops - have noticed the growing number of ESL truckers, some of whom speak so little English that truck stop corporations such as Love’s have hired spanish-speaking cashiers.

I have witnessed these interactions on numerous occasions.

Worse, it seems like nearly 100% of the time that I crook my head to look at a truck driver who can’t seem to control his vehicle he clearly appears to be foreign born.

Isn’t the rule “No more than 12 consecutive hours on the road, with a mandatory 8 hour break after”?

That’s my understanding, please correct if wrong.

It used to be that simple. Now they made it complicated and confusing. You will have to read it for yourself to get a full grasp...

Lol... Now imagine someone with an IQ that limits them to driving a truck for a living...

I think someone who has never driven a truck came up with those... Know what it sounds like? Female logic where you are damned if you do and damned if you do not. You comply with one rule you are breaking a different one. No way to win...
