True for some of them, though not all...some were criminals.
I’ve been fascinated by the BOG BODIES since they found the first very well advertised/talked about on in the early 1950s!

Oh gee...that would absolutely be THE worst idea and film EVER made; even beating out the first remake of the original, not so good version of THE MALTESE FALCON, with Better Davis and Warren Williams in the starring roles. It wasn’t until the SECOND remake, with Humphrey Bogart, that that movie was well done!

I don’t recall ‘young virgins’ being sacrificed in either movie.

You might enjoy Professor Ronald Hutton:

WHY IS THE POLICEMAN THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE?

why is there a photo of every girl chosen QUEEN OF THE MAY, or whatever, every year, but NOT this year's?

WHY ARE ALL OF THE GIRLS STILL ALIVE, BUT THIS YEAR'S GIRL "CLAIMED TO BE MISSING"?

The entire film is based on ancient pagan traditions AND the luring of a STRANGER to the island, because the apple crop had failed AND the fishing season had gone badly the previous year to......hence the "sacrifice"!

All of this is 100% different from THE LOTTERY, which is a yearly occurrence AND always ends with a MURDER; regardless of age!

And THE WICKERMAN is a MAY DAY FESTIVAL; remember the Maypole dance and the MORRIS DANCERS?

None of that is in THE LOTTERY!

For a book and later a T.V. series starring Bette Davis ( both good, but the book is better! ) that is more comparable to THE WICKERMAN, though American written, by Thomas Tryone ( love all of his books! ), and set in Ct., HARVEST HOME hits that nail on the head...with corn dollies, etc., very old holdovers from the pagan British Isles of long ago.

Granted, I haven't read, nor seen the film series of HARVEST HOME since they came out...ditto THE LOTTERY, so I may be missing some details here and there, but I've also tried to keep it brief and not overload with details. in the event that some might want to read or see these books and/or films/programs.

Here’s ‘Philomena Cunk’ trying to get the best of Prof. Hutton:

“The Stuarts were an astonishingly accident prone family”

LOL!

LOL...oh dear; she hasn't ever heard Dr Kat on the Stuarts, I bet.

I loved his video on fairies and several others I saw on his home page, that I remember well. The man is BRILLIANT and his videos are engrossing. :-)

The Lottery was interesting because the lady who ended up sacrificed was ok with the whole thing until she was the one at risk.

Reminded me somewhat of all the people who are in favor of this, that or the other until the bill comes due and they have to pony up.

Asked oldest cub what he thought about it and he said that he got from it that every group that you join is going to have a price. Be sure that the price is one you are willing to pay.

Never thought of it that way before.

There did not seem to be a fence around the place. They could have left at any time. But they chose to stay.

In real life, ‘Philomena’ is Diane Morgan. She’s a brilliant comedienne, and you’d get a kick out of her other videos:

Sweet dreams.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh, I see. Many thanks for another interesting suggestion!

Am now watching the first link you gave me and I have a few quibbles with Hutton, re MITHRAS, which, through having read several books, by other experts, contradict his assumptions, as well as his supposed facts about this "mystery religion".

One of the first things I did after the house fire was run upstairs to see if my totes full of Celtic/megaliths/ancient UK history books had survived.

Some got a bit wet but were salvageable and I was so relieved.

I have books out of print I could never replace.

The bog body books were okay.

It would be titled To Woke A Mockingbird now, no doubt.

Boorman’s gorgeous Excalibur included the mythological/sacred kingship aspect wonderfully.

The land fell barren because Arthur was “ broken” and needed to be healed by the Grail.

Even the movie The Fisher King ( love it) touched upon cleverly masked Arthurian mythology

I could even drag in the drawing and quartering and distributing his bits around the countryside of The Wallace as a backfiring bad idea by Longshanks because the heathen peasantry understood the sacred kingship aspects and were inflamed to fight.

Geeze.
Shoulda read the thread before I asked it f you had watched Harvest Home.

This is just one of the reasons I love Jethro Tull.

The majority of Ians songs reference “ the old ways” of his country.

May Day is not just some silly dance done by kids.

Thank GOD your books were okay!

Like you, I also have long out of print books, that would be impossible to replace and IF I lost, would break my heart.
