The Center Square) – A nonprofit is in line to get McClean County tax dollars and private donations to build 50 cabin tiny homes for homeless individuals.
Critics say similar projects haven't resulted in a decline in homelessness. At a recent City Council meeting, Bloomington city council member Sheila Montney pointed to data from Denver and Seattle, cities that have implemented similar low-barrier housing models.
“The outcomes from Denver are significantly concerning to me,” she said, noting that 19 residents of micro-communities there had died, 258 returned to homelessness, 61 were jailed, and 105 had unknown outcomes, statistics she described as “generally negative.”

Take the USAID money and put it to work here.
WPA day labor to start.
Yeah, the author was TRYING to make some salient points, but you’re right. Many people WANT to be homeless, or are so addicted or whacked out mentally that it’s not really something they’re even capable of - maintaining a single ROOM of their own, or an apartment or an entire HOME - tiny or not.
From what I understand about the program (Beau has built houses for them), Habitat for Humanity really keeps an eye on the properties they build for the ‘down and out’ and they WILL kick your butt back to the curb if you’re not taking good enough care of their, ‘investment.’
I DO wish the VA would do more to help homeless Veterans. Female homeless Vets (with a kid or two in tow) are comprising the biggest increase of homelessness these days. :( There but for the Grace of God go I!
(Well, probably not, but if I had been injured or had PTSD I certainly would NOT have the life I enjoy now; that’s a given.)
In order to incorporate a modest but perfectly usable bathroom, adequate kitchen with dining table, and separate bedroom, about 300 square feet is needed.
And then it must be hooked to water, sewer, and electricity.
Efficiency apartments in other words .
If separate little homes then some more land should be available for tiny “lawn”/porch on front a lawn or porch perhaps back as well. Could be built brownstone style with common sidewalls.
Wait a minute, our ancestors already built homes to maximum density of land while affordable as possible to the residents.
Repealing vagrancy laws was another stupid Democrat move.
Bloomington will never be Normal but it will always be close to Normal.
I see tiny slums, and if I recall they like to set the tiny homes on fire.
Had this nonsense in a past residential location, and it’s just a mess. If they’re actually run with some discipline and rules, the typical result happens. Constant turn-over, and endless newspaper sob stories from booted ‘residents’. Reading between the lines, the reason they’re homeless comes shining through - they won’t abide by any rule or norm. Rules, norms, conditions are all invitations to see how far they can be twisted, ignored, broken or otherwise corrupted.
Rebellion is an evil spirit.
Those Tiny Homes sure do look cute and cozy, but they seem to provide no more security than standing in an old fashioned Phone Booth. Even still, it beats sleeping on wet grass clippings in some dark alley.Trailers get made fun of for being favored by folks with little money, but so what? If I was in that state of need, I would prefer living in a trailer, with a few yards of empty space surrounding me at all times. Plus, most Trailers cluster together to create their own small communities.
Housing cost is insane, and availability of affordable basic survival housing isn't good.
That said, having housing is only one part of the chain.
I've been eyeing used Airstream campers on BookFace Marketplace recently, and contemplating if I could pare down enough to live in one if need be*. "Maybe".

That still won’t get them to work or get them off drugs. What a waste of taxpayer money.
They move to Florida.
The only five things they
have to fear are,
1.MOSQUITOS.
2.Gators
3.Sharks
4.Florida Man and
Woman.
Woodseys abound in Brevard county Florida.
How many abandoned military bases are available?
Ship them there and leave them there.
