‘Japanese walking’ trend may be better than 10,000 steps a day — and you only need 30 minutes

Americans love to say they’re too busy to break a sweat — but a viral fitness trend is blowing that excuse out of the water.

Enter “Japanese walking,” a simple, science-backed exercise routine that promises serious gains in just 30 minutes.

“All movement is medicine, but if you’re short on time or want to get the most bang for your buck, this is for you,” strength training coach Eugene Teo said in a recent TikTok.

It’s long been said that taking 10,000 steps per day is the key to better health, with research linking regular walking to improved cardiovascular fitness, improved sleep quality and even a lower dementia risk.

But that magic number isn’t rooted in science. Instead, it originated from a marketing campaign to promote a Japanese pedometer in the 1960s

I try to walk my dog but it’s actually a tug of war.

Funny how the same concepts get repackaged as "ancient Japanese secret" or "Native American technique."

Gen Z influencers discover something and they think they are pioneers.

LOL, I have to pull the little dog along - that’s the “slow” walking. The big dog pulls ME along - at a very fast pace - that’s the “fast” walking.

If a squirrel appears, I’m dead.

Covers everything and I should live forever.

True! It’s quite funny to me, with all the intense rainfall and thunderstorms I look at the forecast about five days out, carefully look for an interval (10% or 20% chance of rain), and after taking note of the current radar and skies, I pounce.

Pounce on the front yard. Rest. Pounce on the backyard. Rest.

Forget the garden yard out back; it’s a SWAMP with its own little pond that takes about a week and a half with no rain to accommodate a mower.

It’s getting so hot and humid here though it’s really getting hard to keep things up.

Actually makes sense. I often do something similar. alternate jogging with walking. My normal walk rate is fairly brisk as it is.

Yup, we've got two acres of yard, so ya gotta keep after it or you're gonna need a brush hog. I was using the push mower for the hills and tighter spots that the tractor can't get to. Wifey rides the tractor.

Our dog walks include 1,000 stop-to-sniff breaks. I get my exercise pulling the leash and saying “C’mon, let’s go 500 times.”

Dog walking is fun too. My daughter has four dogs, and walks them every day. Some days two at a time totalling four miles a day.

I was doing a 14-minute mile on the treadmill five days a week, had lots of energy to walk to nearby store too. Then fell and broke my knee. Since then, it’s hard to get back to that routine. Slowly but surely it will happen. But not when the temperature is 100.

I walk around the pool until I get the 10,000 steps. It is level. My wife says it’s boring but we can’t walk together because I am slow.

If you can do it, Sprinting is the best use of your time.

20 sprints of 5 seconds, that’s 100 seconds plus whatever time you take in between the sprints.

It’s like spending 2 hours in a gym.

But you have to work your way up to it before doing it, or else you will strain something.

Never eat at a place called “Moms”.
Never play cards with a man named Doc.
Don’t eat fried food, it angries up the blood.
Stay out of bars with human ears nailed to the wall.
Never run, always walk.

walking or whatever exercise/activity cannot be the answer to a crap food filled lifestyle. Crap food being mostly processed (packaged, take out etc) foods.

so stupid people keep trying to find “the answer” in so many other things, when 80-90% of it is what you eat.

I recently dropped 14 lbs in a month just by drastically cutting back on processed foods and instead prepping my own. Some times batches I could freeze. no exercise outside of daily work and life, not even lemon water or teas or other weight loss helpers. just committed to stop ingesting crap food.

Even the organic crap food is still crap.

It’s all made to make people sick and dead, while companies manufacturing get rich. kind of like the vaccines, and so many other things they tell us to do/use.
