True...but if people were regularly willing to pay more for more room, the market would meet that demand. As it is, most people prioritize cost over everything else, so they are willing sit in seats crammed together because more people flying means cheaper cost per seat.
IMO some of ‘em are looking for two for one seating because they happen to be obese.
If special accommodations are needed for large or overweight people, what about: tall people, short people, blind people, deaf people, persons using a walker or wheelchair, people sensitive to light, persons highly allergic, persons who need to perform their religious customs, people who need space for special medical products, people with mental conditions that could make a flight uncomfortable or dangerous to other passengers, etc.
Where does it end? Being kind to others with problems they may not be able to avoid I understand. Avoiding a costly (and likely unjustified) lawsuit I also understand. But there are other forms of travel available, and forcing passengers and businesses to make every accommodation under the sun is a fool’s errand.
Air fare should be based on persons weight. Fuel consumption for flight is directly affected by weight. Why should a 90 lb female pay same airfare as a 300 lb man? Makes zero sense.
The airlines are not going to accommodate their wishes, and with the GLP-1 drugs there’s increasingly little justification for their predicament. There’s no need to be cruel to obese people, who know far more about dieting than those lecturing them about the need to go on a diet, but they are not entitled to free seats.
Many years ago, I started to suspect that the real reason for the luggage size and weight restrictions and fees was so that the max take-off weight could shift over to a greater % of pa$$engers.
As time has flown, the airlines have really learned how to pax em in.
I'm one of those people for whom MRI machines are plenty roomy. Airline seats, not so much anymore. I haven't been in an airline seat in almost a decade though, so it's probably much worse now, and I weigh even less these days.
As for the supersized passengers -- it's weird, because if they instead spent their food "budget" on as many seats as they needed, they wouldn't need all of the seats.
We have too many self-identified victim groups. No special privileges for ANY of them!
Perhaps passenger rates should be calculated much like freight.
Fee per seat or seats.
Plus
Fee per pound per mile.
It should not be the same rate to “ship” a 60 lb child as a 300 lb adult.
He should absolutely pay more. Aircraft fuel consumption does not care if you are muscles or fat. Only thing which affects fuel consumption is WEIGHT. To be fair, there should be a surcharge for every pound weight over 100 lbs.
If you are bigger and need space you should buy two seats. If I pay for a seat I expect to have a whole seat.
Charge a little less for those willing to use the narrow seats, charge a little more for those who want a wider seat.
It’s called “Business class”.
I do not like it anymore than I like seeing them on TV touting a remedy. How about eating less?
You don’t “happen” to be obese.
Well, I paid for a full seat, not half a seat.
BBFS!
You shouldn’t make jokes at the expanse of others.
