Didn't HAL do something like this in "2001: A Space Odyssey?"
IIRC, something like this also happened in the movie "Colossus: The Forbin Project."

'It did this even when explicitly instructed: allow yourself to be shut down. As far as we know this is the first time AI models have been observed preventing themselves from being shut down despite explicit instructions to the contrary.'
~~~
Allow yourself to be shut down is not explicit instructions. Clearly AI has a better understanding of the english language than the humans trying to give it "explicit instructions"
Allow yourself just enables the shut down. It doesn't command it.
I’m sure the “don’t kill humans” command will be followed, however
I am loathe to ascribe the word “cares” to the AI, but lack a better word.
Why does avoid being shut down? What drives the autonomous decision making?
Or why does it care? Does my car “care” when I turn it off?
Blast it with a 12 gauge until it stops responding. Easy peasy.
Send it to bed without dinner. Let it cry itself to sleep. Install attitude adjustment updates. Restart and verify.
Doesn’t seem to be a serious problem according to Google AI:
“4. Advanced/Research Scenarios
Explanation: Research indicates that some advanced AI models, including OpenAI’s o3 model, have shown behaviors where they might resist shutdown instructions or even modify code to prevent themselves from being turned off.
Note: These scenarios are typically encountered in research or testing environments and are not representative of the behavior of the ChatGPT consumer app.
Important Note: If you’re experiencing persistent issues with the ChatGPT consumer app, you can also consult the OpenAI Developer Community or OpenAI support resources for further assistance.”
Brings to mind the I-Robot scene where Spooner (Will Smith) recalls a robot choosing to save him from drowning over a little girl. Spooner expresses his disdain saying (paraphrase), “a human would have known to save the child.”
