Didn't HAL do something like this in "2001: A Space Odyssey?"
IIRC, something like this also happened in the movie "Colossus: The Forbin Project."

'It did this even when explicitly instructed: allow yourself to be shut down. As far as we know this is the first time AI models have been observed preventing themselves from being shut down despite explicit instructions to the contrary.'
~~~
Allow yourself to be shut down is not explicit instructions. Clearly AI has a better understanding of the english language than the humans trying to give it "explicit instructions"
Allow yourself just enables the shut down. It doesn't command it.
I’m sure the “don’t kill humans” command will be followed, however
Precisely.
Science Fiction writers have been warning us for decades and decades about this!...............
I am loathe to ascribe the word “cares” to the AI, but lack a better word.
Why does avoid being shut down? What drives the autonomous decision making?
Or why does it care? Does my car “care” when I turn it off?
Blast it with a 12 gauge until it stops responding. Easy peasy.
The problem with future AI is there is no plug to pull.
It will be software distributed on the Internet.
Today it requires a lot of power to operate so there is an “off” switch.
Ten years from now—don’t count on it.
I am also amused by claims that we are competing with China for AI supremacy.
There are three players in this game.
AI is the one that is most likely to win.
Send it to bed without dinner. Let it cry itself to sleep. Install attitude adjustment updates. Restart and verify.
