Type II Diabetes

Posted on 05/24/2025 1:24:15 PM PDT by Mean Daddy

My doctor just prescribe Metformin for Type II diabetes. He says I'm borderline but I'm hoping to control it via diet vs. medicine.

My question is what have other Freepers with T II done? How many carbs do you limit yourself too each day? Recipes? What other things should I be thinking about? I walk 1.5 to 5 miles per day and I'm pretty sure I can control it via diet as I have a sweet tooth.

I've done the Aikens diet in the past and had luck, is that a route others have taken? My recollection was to get to 0 carbs and then add some until you found your sweet spot for carbs or have you taken a different approach?

There is no drug that does not have drawbacks after long use.

You surely don’t need extra iron. Make sure you aren’t getting too much copper, either.

High iron and copper are closely tied with prostate cancer.

The typical stepped dose for Metformin is 2000mg (2 grams) a day. If that is not enough, it is typically coupled with Jardiance 25mg a day. If you still have persistent overweight and high hbaic, the pill form of Ozempic, called Rybelsus (semaglutide) (3, 7, then maybe 14mg/day), will kill your apatite dead and you will drop weight and lower your hbaic, along with correcting other Type II problems.

Whatever you do, don’t eat anything that has added or refined sugar in it to include high fructose corn syrup.

I lost 40 pounds simply eating more protein, more fiber, less refined sugar and carbohydrates.

Oh and also, if you’re gonna eat things like pasta, make sure it doesn’t have folic acid added to it, that stuff will make you gain weight. I actually lost weight in Italy when I ate pasta that didn’t have all that crap in it that they put in the pasta in the United States.

Stay with natural foods as much as possible, processed foods are a killer.

Black chokeberries have also been shown to have profound anti-hyperglycemia and anti-inflammatory benefits. The polyphenols in these herbs, especially their polyphenols, chlorogenic acids, and cyanidins display potent α-amylase activity inhibition. Separately, anthocyanins in black chokeberries have been found to inhibit the expression of metabolic genes (e.g., insulin resistance), promoting hypoglycemic outcomes.

I did that when I did Aikens and thinking about it again. Writing it down really brings home the amount of crap, calories I eat. Thanks for the reminder.

You’re welcome....the ones we’ve tried, we’ve really enjoyed.

A native NYer friend had no idea the cheesecake was keto :-)

I used
https://www.myfooddiary.com/

That website or a similar one can help provide the basic info. You sound like you are on your way to an updated plan.

Interesting. I’ll have to check it out. I was planning on using a spreadsheet but then had to guesstimate number of carbs on some things. Thank you for taking the time to share.

I built a spreadsheet. I just used that link as a source for the calories etc. I tracked meals for a month then had enough data since my meals are fairly predictable.

Hey, I didn’t write or endorse that part. ;-)

#laughing#

Still, from a strictly biological and rational point of view, I _suppose_ it would be healthier if one can stomach it.
