POLK COUNTY, Fla. - A kayaker was attacked and killed by an alligator Tuesday afternoon at Lake Kissimmee State Park in Central Florida, according to authorities.
Authorities were alerted to the incident just before 4 p.m. when a witness reported an encounter with the reptile.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission released a statement that read, "Preliminary information indicates that a woman was canoeing when she encountered an alligator and went into the water. The woman was later recovered from the water and was declared deceased."
The most recent incident comes during peak alligator mating season, a period when the animals are typically more active and territorial.

Darwin award winner of the week. WTF goes kayaking in an alligator infested swamp?
Saturday, I pulled up to the traffic light and couldn’t believe my eyes. The car in front of me had a U Florida Tennessee vanity license tag.

The distance from the alligator’s eyes to it’s nose is in inches is the same number as the length in feet

My sister and I got caught coming back to their house on lake Santa Fe in Melrose just south of Jax one evening. We were paddling their ganoe down the canal just after dark and a couple of big gators started grunting and we could hear the splashing of some hitting the water. We were never so glad to see the light on the end of their dock. We still joke about it.
The same people who go paddle boarding on Cape Cod and then get filmed with a Great White Shark circling them.
I love seeing coastal democrat tenderfoot types wandering Arizona desert rattlesnake country in shorts and flip flops.😎
I went to the la Paloma resort outside of Tucson back in the 90s. I remember the signs on the golf course not to look for balls off the sides of the fairways due to rattlesnakes.
Maybe they mean it flipped.
Yeah, had to be a tourist. All along the Gulf coast gators are everywhere, primarily ‘cause some stupid states protect them.
They are not invisible. If that floating log follows you it is not a log. That raised trash heap along the shore is not a beaver dam — it is a nest.
Geesh.
That's what caddies are for. 😉
NO WAY am I getting on any water in FL in a kayak or canoe. Nor swim in anything not a pool. I have to be able to see the bottom😄
Initial reports I saw here were that gator grabbed her out of the kayak.
Lake Kissimmee is supposedly #2 in the state for gator population.
Mess with the bull, get the deathroll.
Last summer we went to Crystal River and rented a house that had kayaks and a boathouse. On our very first day there, I was sitting on the edge of the property along the canal. I thought I saw a gator in there, so called to my hubby. As soon as I yelled, that alligator turned around and came towards me and went up to the boathouse. No thanks. I ran back inside the screened lanai. We decided no kayaking on that trip.
