And now we have like 3.5 seconds before a judge overturns this decision.

SF is a cesspool. That said, Alcatraz is a big tourist attraction now. Not fit for actual housing inmates unless it was torn down and rebuilt from scratch. Why? Put a new prison in the Aleutian or Rat Islands in AK

Aren’t there lots of places this could be duplicated with fresh, new modern methods and technology construction, and with hostile surroundings from Alaskan islands to Death Valley?

Are the escape difficulties that were so insurmountable almost 100 years ago still in the same status today, are cold water and currents still the end all security concerns of today and the next 50 years in advanced modern prison escapes from the crime elites?

Prisoners such as Al Capone, "Machine-Gun" Kelly, Arthur "Doc" Barker, Robert Stroud, and Alvin Karpis have served time at Alcatraz.

"Now this is something the other tour guides won't tell you. In this particular cell-block, Machine Gun Kelly had what we call in the prison system, a "bitch".....

Alcatraz is a crumbling wreck. It will cost far more to construct a functioning prison there than starting from scratch in a desolate area in the middle of California.

This is a brilliant move by President Trump. Not sure that they will ever actually reopen the prison but the PR will be off the charts

It’s not happening. Alcatraz is a mess. All that salt spray corrodes everything. And it’s a pain to build on. It would take years to get it up to snuff again. He should talk to the DOGE boys, this plan is really inefficient.

I was going to say, the biggest problem is letting the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals having dominion over it.

If President Trump wants an inhospitable maximum-security low-privilege prison for the worst of the worst, he should build a Klingon Rura Penthe deep in the heart of Alaska and send all the equatorial gang-bangers there.

Rebuild Alcatrez? Heck no. It is a significant historical site: a fort, then a military prison, then a maximum security prison with a quite colorful history. It was already a hopelessly outdated and seriously deteriorated site when the Army turned it over to the federal Bureau of Prisons, which is why it was always a notorious hellhole when the worst of the worst were imprisoned there.

There is no shortage of better places to put prisons. Alcatraz should remain a park. And it will.

I am opposed to touching historical parks, period. There is plenty of federal land that could usefully reexamined, but most of it is managed by BLM and, should in theory be open for farming, ranching, timbering, mining, etc. The NPS owns the huge national parks out west, but the historical sites are generally pretty small, with the Civil War battlefields being the largest. Leave ‘em alone.

Anyone that’s ever toured the Rock knows this will never happen. Let it remain the charming tourist attraction that everybody knows and loves.
