The life-or-death case for self-driving cars
msn.com ^

Posted on 05/05/2025 7:08:32 AM PDT by DIRTYSECRET

The average American adult will spend around three years of their life driving. If robots could take the wheel instead, well, think of all the Netflix shows we could stream instead. Don't forget work via wifi.

But the true benefit of a self-driving revolution will be in lives saved. And new data from the autonomous vehicle company Waymo suggests that those savings could be very great indeed.

...deny municipalities easy money by allowing a way to drink and travel in one's own vehicle without endangering anyone.

Just when car manufacturers are about to be forced to install remote cut-offs that the police will use to override one's control, too.

This is a frightening slippery slope. The hammer that the safety cult will use to “make it so” will be the claim that self driving cars are not able to share the road with human driven cars - ergo, human driven cars must be severely restricted or banned. No thanks.

According to the video I linked it won't be the safety cult, it will be big industry that is investing billions making these cars. Think they haven't set some money aside for political reasons?

Neighborhood streets will only need to be wide enough for one vehicle as parking will be unnecessary-no car ownership. Neighborhood garages for rent to serve locals-better service.

See my previous posts on this thread. The technology is the EASY part.

My prediction is that AV adoption is going to take a very long time because it basically has to be implemented in a closed system where AVs don’t interact with “dumb” vehicles.

Can the police override your destination instructions? Just in case. It might save lives. You have nothing to worry about if you’re a good person.

This is absolutely going to happen. The upsides are enormous.

What needs to be done is to protect against the downsides.

1. There should be an opt-out switch so people who want to drive themselves can do so without interference.
2. There needs to be a privacy switch so no data collected in your own vehicle goes anywhere you do not want it to.
3. There needs to be a opt out of network switch, so you can have an autonomous vehicle which is not included in a data network.

The original autonomous vehicle programs/contests sponsored by DARPA all required the cars to be independent and not reliant on two way communications. Passive reception of GPS signals satisfied this requirement.

Active functioning with the interchange of data violates this standard.

Doable. You(we) have to get past the naysayers, including those on our side. Remember-the left is against everything. Star Wars wouldn’t work. Natural gas is abundant and cleaner than coal but they don’t want any fossil fuels. Do you think they would really want renewables if it led to economic growth?

Caribou herds would go down if the Alaska pipeline were built. The warmth of the pipeline resulted in an increased population as it made them more amorous.

Can’t reason. We’ve gotta squish them like a bug.

Please list them. I have probably been posting on FR threads like this for more than 20 years, and I have yet to come across any claims of “upsides” in AV technology that are actually met by the auto industry right now.

The upsides are almost all in the future. Thus your question excludes them by definition.

The technology is advancing rapidly. There are already limited autonomous vehicles in operation in urban areas. They are showing themselves to be at least as good as human drivers.

They do not have to be perfect. They simply have to be better than the average human driver.

Data collected so far, admittedly by the Waymo and Tesla companies, indicates autonomous vehicles have already reached that point. If they have not, they will soon.

Certainly, these are in limited areas of some cities. It is hard to see theoretical limits to extending autonomous vehicles to the highway network, which, in many ways, presents less problems per mile than crowded city streets.

The video takes it further. No garages, no private ownership. Parking costs too high so the car just drives itself in circles until someone needs service. Remember, a driverless car doesn’t need passengers either.

Upsides to automated vehicles?

-You can be a drunk passenger... that is until something goes wrong.

-If you install the toilet option, you can defecate and urinate while the car drives itself. No more potty breaks (or catheters and diapers like astronauts intent on murdering someone).

-You can sleep while the car drives itself. No, scratch that - you can be bombarded with consumer advertising for your entire trip.

-You can attend online meetings while the car drives itself... and masturbate to your coworkers like Jeffrey Toobin did at CNN.

-Instead of going to a fast food drive-through, the fast food drive-along car can meet yours and give you your meal, and diabetes.

-If you die en route, no one has to deal with your body until it gets to your worldly destination. "Hey kids, grandma's here. Oh my God!!"

-If you have a medical emergency, and you bought the add-on medical alert option, your car can to take you to the nearest hospital, with its own sirens and flashing lights. It can send signals to other vehicles directing them to get out of the way.

-If your car catches on fire, it can drive itself right into a lake or river to extinguish the lithium battery blaze.

-If you miss a loan payment, your car can drive itself to the repo man or the parking lot of the lending institution.

-You can send a bomb to your ex-wife's house, instead of returning the kids after a custody weekend.

-You won't be offended by bumper stickers, American flags, or MAGA hats as only those who vote properly and support things such as LGBTQMS-13 will be allowed on the roads with you.

At the risk of aging myself and sounding boastful …

In my STEM field I have been involved in various aspects of transportation technology deployment since the days of intelligent vehicle-highway systems (IVHS). I’ve been a skeptic of many of these technologies because the professionals who were peddling them always seemed to have variations of the same answer when I’d ask about their measurable benefits — “The upsides are almost all in the future.”

They’ve been “in the future” for 30+ years now. LOL.

If you want to reduce collisions, the best thing you can do is eliminate people interacting with smartphones while trying to drive.

Spend less time on climate change and more time on important topics, like drivers ed in K-12.

BINGO! You are very smart! Your next trick is to share your wisdom with the naysayers on this spread.
