The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.
Pretty Iris - Thanks! :)
I told her to give them some time.
Blueberry Lavender looks lovely!
And, of course, I had to go looking for Flower Jelly recipes!

And, yes. All TWENTY tomato plants that needed planting this morning are IN THE GROUND! I have two ‘Cherokee Purple’ to plant, but I’m waiting for bulbs to die back some more before I mulch those beds. There is only room for those two tomato plants, so I HAVE to stop.
24 plants MIGHT be enough for this season. ;)
All of our hunting dogs have Native American Tribe or Warrior names. There’s been some overlap through the years - we’re on our second ‘Comanche’ right now, LOL!
Some others in the pack right now are: ‘Osage’ ‘Payute’ ‘Sioux’ ‘Blackfoot’ ‘Shawnee’ ‘Mandan’ ‘Fremont’ and ‘Shasta.’
I give the puppies temporary names based upon a color marking, or a personality trait. They get their ‘Fur-Ever’ names when we decide to keep them, or when they are sold to others who can name them what they want.
My favorite name out of this last batch was ‘Sugar’ as the Puppy Daddy is ‘Cane.’ ‘Sugar Cane,’ LOL! With Registered dogs, you also list both parents in their ‘Registered Name of Record.’
(Her puppy name was ‘Joker’ as she has a half-tan, half-white face.)
My tomatoes and peppers are going in tomorrow.
It’s finally going to get back to normal weather and we’ll see the sun again.
If I were to build a ranch home it would need 36" doors, a basement or at least, 1/2 basement with interior access stairs, a mud room / laundry room with a toilet and stall shower (so I do not have to go trapsing through the house to get to the bathroom.) A good sized pantry with a window facing north. Large bathrooms with walk in showers. A kitchen with a skylight and range hood and lots of room and counter space and an island with the sink. (I do not want any plumbing on an exterior wall.) Attached garage or a covered windway that can be enclosed in the winter. Something like that.
Its a bit dubious at this point, but who knows?
Good article on dahlias from seed. Her dahlias looked maybe an inch or a few leaves bigger than mine when I set them out.
I had heard of “pinching” in a general way - glad she gave the particulars.
The deer got into my niece’s flowers 2 nights ago. I don’t recall her having deer issues with her flowers before - I hope she has enough for her flower stall at the farmer’s market.
I have to keep moving my flat of Dahlia from seed OUT each morning. It was 70 today and the greenhouse was 99 degrees!
(Everything still in there got doused with water 2x today.)
I’m hoping that now that I KNOW they like it a bit cooler, they will take off. They’re not nearly as big as the ones at Floret Farm as far as planting out.
Reminder: I’m in Zone 5a. It’s ONLY May 25th with a very early Memorial Day Weekend. My ‘Flanders Field’ Poppies haven’t even bloomed, yet! Just settle down, Diana! ;)
Dreams DO come true! :)
I’m kind of ‘addicted’ to watching ‘Tiny Home’ videos on You Tube. If worse ever comes to worst (did I say that right?) for me and I lose Beau, I will rent out the Big House and build myself a Tiny Home on the property and rent out the Big House to a young couple that can share the garden chores with me and shovel/plow snow. ;)
A treasure trove of flower jellies - thank you for that link!
:)
There’s your Million Dollar Idea!
The toms were drenched, but most survived, thank God.
Boston area picked up 3-3.5″, and the South Shore, Cape, and Islands saw a whopping 4-6″of rain! ...Boston’s total rainfall came out to be 3.44″, with 3.11″ occurring on Thursday. This set the daily rainfall record and actually ranks as the 17th rainiest day in the last 50 years! -https://www.yahoo.com/news/does-nor-easter-rank-among-215750045.html
Zucchini poisoning? Never heard of it until this year! Great excuse to turn down those horse leg zucchini!
I’m still going to grow some, probably just two.
I grate it and freeze it and use it for zucchini cookies and zucchini bread.
My pepper plants (Thai and Sweet Orange Bell) have been loving this wet, more often than not cool Spring. My tomatoes, not so much...
By week`s end, the aforementioned broad long wave trof aloft barrels across the Ohio Valley. The GFS is more robust with associated pops, but the other models dummy it down in the ensembled blend to minor/small pops. We`ll see how that plays out in time as the week plays out.
After its ultimate passage, our time spent in the thermodynamic heaven of late May temperatures in the 70s just might disappear for a while (long while?) with some 80s beginning to sneak back into the forecast by next weekend or early next week. The 8-14 day outlook suggests above normal temps in a building ridge pattern takes hold by then...which puts us well into June and...maybe disappears those highs in the 70s until...??next fall?? At least dew points remain around 60F or below thru the next 7 days...after that...all bets are off....so let`s enjoy this last bit of thermal bliss while we can.
I suspect I could have gotten away with having my Muir Lettuce out in the garden until the end of May? Would those brief (2-3 day) periods in the upper 80's to 90 in early May have been enough to trigger bolting?
What about something like horse jockeys wear? Not sure if that would work, but maybe.
Thanks - I’d have to give those (jockey goggles) a look. As it is, I’ve ordered a couple different types of motorcyclist’ (dirt-bikers’) goggles from Amazon. And I can possibly modify those by upgrading the vents’ filtration if need be, or even stealing an “exhalation valve” off a N95 that has such. That last would probably look silly, but I don’t care, for mowing tall grass!
One good thing about Amazon is the (usually) relatively easy returns.
