The Garden Thread - May, 2025
May 1, 2025 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

Posted on 05/01/2025 6:15:12 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.

“The German Johnson tomato is a large, pink heirloom variety known for its meaty texture and rich flavor, making it ideal for slicing in sandwiches. It thrives in warm climates, particularly in North Carolina, and can weigh over a pound each.”

That explains why it’s a favorite for him. I’ve not grown it; it wasn’t one we carried at Seed Savers, though it is an Heirloom. I see Johnny’s and Burpees sell seed - maybe they sell the started plants, too?

How to Grow and Care for Gloriosa Lily

https://www.thespruce.com/growing-the-gloriosa-lily-5105298

Very Pretty! I just have ‘Stargazer’ Lily - the big, showy white ones. My perennial bed needs some upgrades. I have a pedestrian yellow Day Lily, the Stargazers, and a few Coneflower that have reverted BACK to the boring old purple, which some of the hybrids eventually do. This year it will get filled with annuals (I grew tons of cutting Dahlia from seed, as well as Zinnia) while I decide what’s going to be added.

Hopefully you can salvage/freeze some of those dishes! If not, invite some other people over, instead! ;)

I just finished cleaning the entire upstairs - two bedrooms, a bath, l-shaped hallway and the Library. No easy feat, since I’ve been l-a-z-y all winter. ;)

If I’m in the Library I get, ‘distracted’ so that room always takes the longest to clean, LOL! Plus the cats are ALWAYS in there - but they scatter when I turn on the vacuum...

Thanks!

Ode to a German Johnson (good read - clever)

Now mom is saying we need to go to NC for some German Johnsons ... but not yet, tomatoes aren’t ripe. :-)

PS ... regarding the food:

I have discovered some cousins I didn’t know about at church. Their great-great grandmother is my great-grand aunt. One had heart surgery a couple of weeks ago - tumor in her heart. She’s doing ok, but still staying home - I will take some of the food to her for dinner. My cousin’s widow is also having a rough time (I took her to a cardiology appointment last week). She’ll be getting dinner as well. The food is “company quality” so perfect to share.

Thank you. I think my Grandma’s / Mom’s / sister’s variety is the “Rothschildiana“ type. It’s a very sweet memory so I hope I have good luck with them.

Had to check but I knew I had a German something tomato plant. It’s a Johnson and the four pack I got are Rutgers which I know nothing about but can guess they were developed at Rutger’s U.

Walking back, some purple plants in the no longer used little front yard garden caught my eye. Looks like I’ve got some volunteer red mustard plants. No gate so the goats can walk right in but I guess they don’t like mustard.

As of yet, I haven’t had to water under the tunnel roof because we’re so saturated. All I’ve done is fertigate the purchased starts.

You are correct, Sir. You win the Canned Ham! ;)

I had ‘challenges’ at work for my staff and the prize was always a Canned Ham. They were all VERY competitive to win that ham, LOL!

The first of three mature trees is almost down. The tree guys came with a huge crane, to lift the worker high into the air over the tree and start dismantling it. They got about 3 hours in. Then one of the cables on the crane broke. Fortunately, the worker was tethered to a branch of a nearby tree, and all is well for him, but the massive project is on hold until they can either get that crane repaired or maybe he can rent another one at some point.

It was crazy to see this huge crane in my driveway, next to our house. It extended to 127 feet so it would be higher than any obstacles. The tree they started with is not the biggest problem tree, but it’s been raining a lot, and the ground is too wet on that other side of the house. They also have to have light winds. It was incredible to watch this young man put on all his safety gear and get hoisted up that high, probably to 115 feet. If I hadn’t seen all of it, I could never believe this.

Anyway, today is no longer a tree day, so I am free to get more planting done. We’re also going away tomorrow evening to meet up with old friends for a music festival near Louisville. It’s rain or shine, so I better get my poncho out. Much to do, but thought I would check in. My herb garden is going like gangbusters, and I won’t be here to harvest it for a few days. I need to look up more basil and oregano recipes. Does anyone have a great pesto recipe handy?

We got lucky - our tree guy brought his Spyder crane but was able to ‘fell’ all 5 of the trees we needed taken down without the Spyder coming off the trailer. At our lake cabin, there were 15 dead pines on the property line, all very tall. That company used a remote controlled crane - my brother was there & said it was really ‘cool’ to watch. We’ve also had trees taken down at our old house due to lightning strikes killing them ... Brian strapped on spikes, had a climbing belt & up the tree he went. He lowered limbs he cut with a rope. I’m just glad there are guys who can & will take down dangerous trees.

My herb garden is flourishing. The little lavender is blooming & attracting butterflies. All 8 jalapeños are blooming up a storm.

I bought a very small Lantana for $2 (”clearance” section at Walmart). It looked pretty good at the time & has really perked up since it’s been getting regular watering. I need a big pot for it - might have to appropriate one of mom’s pots where she currently has fake flowers. I hate fakes, but she claims she can’t keep up with watering real ones.

Hope the music festival stays dry :-)

Pesto Pasta with Crispy Parm Chicken
Pasta is best when it involves pesto and crispy parm chicken.

WET BATTER 1 large egg 1 tsp Italian seasoning 1 tbl grated parm salt/pepper DRY BATTER 1/3 cup plain breadcrumbs 1/3 cup Panko 1/4 cup grated parm 1/2 tbl Italian seasoning 1 tsp ea oregano, dried parsley, salt 1/2 tsp black pepper

Instructions CRISPY CHICKEN Whisk egg Italian seasoning, grated parm, black pepper, and salt. In 2nd bowl, combine plain breadcrumbs, panko, grated parm, Italian seasoning, oregano, dried parsley, s/p. First wet batter chix using one hand and let any excess drip off. Transfer to dry batter; use clean hand to coat well; transfer to plate. Repeat; rest for 10 min. Heat veg oil hot for shallow frying, fry chicken on each side until beautifully golden and cooked thru. Fry in batches so the pan is not crowded. Transfer to a wire rack to drip off excess oil.

CREAMY PESTO SAUCE over med, saute butter/garlic a min or two. Add pesto and h/cream; bring to simmer. Once bubbling, add cr/cheese and lots of parm. Mix well so the cheese is completely incorporated. S/p, add red pepper flakes. THE PASTA Boil pasta in salted water. Drain when cooked and toss in the sauce. Chop the chicken and add on top. Enjoy warm!
