The Garden Thread - May, 2025
May 1, 2025 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

Posted on 05/01/2025 6:15:12 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.

Got some tatsoi to transplant and everything that’s already in the ground could use some fertilizer. Will take an hour to get the drip system finished since figuring out a new arrangement of tubing for tunnel beds and having removed the pump and controller for winter.

Other to do thing is to get something running that cuts grass. Weed wacker might fire up. Push mower needs tank dumped and carb cleaned. Riding mower and tractor need parts so that will have to wait. Time to trade in these goats for sheep. Better lawnmowers.

It’s nice to see SOMEONE excited about Turnips, LOL!

Bwahaha -- you should see how excited I get over parsnips. :-)

I found one growing in our dirt driveway. Not sure how the seed got there, but there it was.

Determined little so-and-so, wasn't it? :-)

I'm sorry, for some reason that made me laugh out loud. I can just see you now, spotting the seedling in your driveway and saying "HEY! What the hell are you doing there?" Heh. :-)

LOL! “Shut Up, Dual-Bag!”

In my younger years a vacuum cleaner as a gift would’ve been received the same way.

Now? A new vacuum would make me HAPPY, LOL!

“Time to trade in these goats for sheep. Better lawnmowers.”

And they’re cute! And they give ya free wool! And in the end, they taste good! ;)

Don’t plant Horseradish! I had a patch at my other farm and years later that stuff was coming up through BLACKTOP!

Now THAT is proof of The Will To Live! ;)

That was about it.

I showed mr. mm and we both got a laugh out of it.

It was not big but was certainly identifiable.

You know, I should have researched sunchokes better before ordering some to try.

So now, since I don’t want them taking over the property, I
m trying to decide whether to container garden them or put them somewhere far from the garden and let the deer decimate them.

I understand deer love them and can wipe them out.

Our first Christmas as newlyweds, hubby had two big boxes gift wrapped under the tree. A electric wok and a food dehydrator, which we still have and use. I never showed my disappointment.

Unless you manage to dig up every choke, you're going to have them forever - but they're not going to get invasive - they will stay where you initially planted them. The flowers don't scatter seed around as far as I know. But ONE missed choke will make a few more, and a few more, and a few MORE!

My Uncle Don planted a row of them on the edge of his main garden. They look like Maximillian Sunflowers. There were a few years there that he gave me 5-gallon buckets of the things! Good thing they mash up like taters, so my boys never knew the difference when a supper side-dish was half-taters, half chokes. ;)

The Maximillian Sunflowers are a Native by us. There is a spot I drive past on the rare occasion I escape the farm in the Fall. It's low-land and kinda 'marshy' which is what they love. Both sides of the road are just FILLED with the Maximillians. It's just gorgeous!

You are a Wise Woman! :)

When my BFFs younger daughter got married, she registered at Farm & Fleet. (Oldest daughter was, ‘ALL ABOUT THE BLING.’ But she’s HILARIOUS and is a great Mama!)

Dana wanted a specific dehydrator so I bought the one she picked and read the reviews and then bought one for us, too. It’s terrific. Glad I bought it. :)

“...so my boys never knew the difference when a supper side-dish was half-taters, half chokes. ;)”

Full Disclosure. As, ‘The Meanest, Most EVIL Step Mother In The World’ I would also buy ONE name-brand box of whatever cereal they each liked and then would re-fill said box with the store brand.

None of them have children yet, so my Vast Knowledge of how to, ‘Raise Boys On The Cheap’ is still on hold! ;)

No wool. Hair Sheep and yes, yummy grass fed lamb.

Week 3 of the new job is over and I feel like an old dog trying to learn new tricks. There’s more to CNC machining airplane parts than I expected.

Got my drip connected and fertilized in ground plants and stuck a few more in the ground as well. Got some more seedlings to transplant tomorrow.
