The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.
It took two weeks to arrive here in Michigan, mailed from Indiana. I finally got fed up waiting and went to the local nursery and bought plants already growing in pots.
Turnips are putting forth some nice foliage. I think they’re going to make it!
Couldn’t have done it without your knowledge & guidance, Diana. Many thanks!
Fish Tacos / no-fry / classic Mexican, seared golden
Lightly pickled red cabbage is a great texture contrast. You will NOT miss deep frying.
Ing Fish Marinade 1.2 lb firm white fillets Zested lime 3 tbl lime juice 1 tbl chipotle powder 1 tbl canned jalapeno, fine-chp 1/4 cup cilantro / coriander, fine-chp, 2 minced gar/cl 3 tbl ol/oil S/p
Quick Pickled cabbage 4 c red cabbage-finely shredded 3 green onion stems, fine-sliced on the diagonal 2 tbl red wine vinegar (or white wine vinegar, cider vinegar) 1/2 tsp salt. Pink Taco Sauce 3/4 cup sour cream (or yogurt or mayo) 2-3 tbsp sriracha. Cook & Serve 1 tbsp olive oil 12 small tortillas (corn or flour), warmed lime wedges, coriander/cilantro leaves
Instructions Combine Fish Marinade ingredients in a ziplock bag. Set aside 20 min to marinate - no longer than 1 hour. Pickled Cabbage: Toss to combine ing and set aside for 30 minutes. Drain excess liquid, scrunch cabbage w/ hands (to help soften). Set aside. Pink Sauce: Mix to combine ing. Cook fish: Heat oil over high heat. Cook 2 min per side, til golden and cooked. Remove to plate; flake into lge pieces. To assemble: later on wrap cabbage then fish, dollop of sour cream, squeeze of lime juice. Fold tortilla over and enjoy.
Recipe Notes: snapper and barramundi have "meaty" flesh. Other good fish include: tilapia, basa, cod, John Dory and Silver Dory, ling, bream, haddock, pollack, monkfish. A good substitute for chipotle pwdr is ½ tbsp each SMOKED paprika, cumin and 1/2 tsp cayenne. Sriracha is a great "cheat" ing to quickly add flavor. To reduce spiciness, swap w/ ketchup.
Gurney’s doesn’t have the greatest reputation. I get their catalog, but never order from them.
Next season, try Jung’s. You’ll like the service and timely delivery and you’ll be supporting my retirement, LOL!
Just look at that Puppy Belly! Love! :)
You’re Welcome! It’s nice to see SOMEONE excited about Turnips, LOL!
YAY! :)
Fish tacos-——on the cheap.
Fish Tacos for the Masses! :)
Good to go.
I used them last year and got great results from my tomatoes and cucumbers.
Unfortunately, I couldn't find the remaining seed packets in my garage cupboard until after the Gurneys arrived.
Definitely Jung's next year......
There’s a nursery near my sons house that carries specialty seeds and so I went there and sure enough, they had what I was looking for.
I don’t get it either, the shipping charges for something you could throw in an envelope and slap a stamp on. Just another profit stream I guess. It’s also discouraging me from buying from them.
I just went to a local high school’s greenhouse sale and found some Chinese 5 color peppers. I got a plant and figured I’d give it a try. Anyone have any experience growing them?
I also found a Ponderosa Red tomato, which I got and was thrilled when I googled it up. A meaty, low seed, beefsteak, heirloom variety.
And I got some local wildflower seeds that are already cold stratified.
Turnips are weeds. They’re so easy to grow. I found one growing in our dirt driveway. Not sure how the seed got there, but there it was.
And fresh turnips are great.

2025’s Best New Garden Plants: Annuals & Tender Perennials
Yay! Now I can afford another garden hose! Thanks, HT! :)
.
Those are some beautiful flowers! So far, I haven’t seen these new beauties, but I’ve only been to Walmart and one garden center. I’ll keep my eye out as I hit the other favorite spots.
Today is a travel day, but tomorrow I hope to get more of the flowers planted in containers that I purchased on Thursday. Yesterday I got several more of the herbs planted, more weeding, more planning and grouping which things will go together. It’s always a process for me. I try to pick things that will look nice together plus have the right sun exposure. I always need things that require only partial sun. I try to get flowers that aren’t the usual. Everyone around here has petunias, which are pretty, but I always look for something at least a little unusual.
I must be doing something right. I had an Amazon delivery lady take a closer look on her way back to her vehicle on the front walkway yesterday. All caught on camera. Made me smile. A silent compliment.
