Not a gator guy, but I have observed them. They are not getting smarter. They are timing human behavior. Very shy animals in my necks of the woods ( 2 places both alligator habitats).
Someone is feeding them.

I have personal experience with a mountain lion that thought doggy-doors were food dispensers. A 35 pound or so red healer stuck his head out the door and WHOOSH! Out he went. The big cat was waiting and drug him right out. The dogs owner, a 5’11” lady watched it happen and dashed out the front door in her PJs with her lion attack gear (yes, a broom) The terrified lion dropped the dog and ran for it’s life. The little guy needed a lot of stitches but he was saved due to her quick reaction and nerves of steel. On an aside Mr. Badger, the dog’s name was “Red” also.
