Scientists Are Analyzing 4,000 Bricks To Unravel Secrets of an Ancient Roman Metropolis [Trier]

Researchers are analyzing 4,000 Roman stamped bricks from Trier to uncover insights into ancient construction, economy, and urban development using both archaeological and scientific techniques...

Trier reached its peak in the 4th century AD, when it served as a residence for Roman emperors. Monumental structures like the Imperial Baths and the Basilica of Constantine still stand as evidence of this prosperous period. These buildings were constructed using fired bricks in various formats, which were employed in walls, roofing, and heating systems...

A key project focus is the spatial distribution of the bricks, which will help researchers trace the architectural development of Augusta Treverorum, the Roman Trier, which became known as Treveris in Late Antiquity. The study may reveal previously unknown state and public construction projects...

For the first time, archaeometric analyses will be conducted on Trier's bricks, examining their material composition – specifically, the chemical composition of the clay – to determine the raw materials used. This will allow researchers to identify or confirm the existence of specific workshops.

I’m reading Western history in the USA lately. The mining boom town of Aurora, CA was founded, grew, prospered and died all in about five years. There weren’t many trees in the Eastern Sierra, so brick plants were built and a lot of the town was built out of brick.

It would be a wonderful brick ghost town to visit...EXCEPT in the 1920s and 1930s, used brick became a highly prized building material in Los Angeles, Pasadena, Pacific Palisades, and Malibu. Many of the mining boom town brick buildings in the Sierras were torn down, but the old brick still lives on in homes in So Cal (at least those still standing after the fires).

Unfr,ated but kinda similar and Interesting- not many people realize but Sadam tried rebui,ding Babylon, pouring vast amounts of money into it, Restoring so e parts of it. He had bricks made with his inscription on them, and he bekeived he was the reincarnated king nebuchzdnezzar, and even had his name on some too, and money mi Ted with both their names on it.

Anyway, here is a blurb about it if anyone is Interested in another. Rick story about history;

Unrelated I meant- forgot to mention that Sadam tried to buy the gate of Ishtar too, but they wouldn’t sell it to him. He was a madman on a mission, but failed. The bible talks about Babylon would be destroyed and never rise again UNTIL the end times- was sadam perhaps trying to usher in the end times? Possible I guess, but more likely he was just whackadoodle and thought himself King nebuchadnezzar. Interesting article le at the link, but doesn’t go into a whole lot of detail- jusy a few general details about sadam

Trier, birthplace of Karl Marx when it was part of the Kingdom of Prussia. I had no idea it was originally a Roman city.

That's an image of the Porta Nigra in Trier.

No doubt called that because it was built by black Africans.

I ac5ually found that on the internet years ago‐ its not quite true, as some misspelled words are very hard for the mind to reassemble to the right spelling, but for the most part it is true, and actually it works the brain harder which helps to stave off dementia, so i am peovid8ng a va,usable service and I don’t even charge people to read my posts lol

Thanks all! And the Centurions would be proud of how that mild tussle got settled with humor. :^)

Trier was the site of one of the four Roman capitals established by Diocletian; also there's a modern myth that's gained some strength in recent years, that after the Varian disaster, Rome stuck with the Rhine as its boundary. That's complete BS.
