Leslie Nielsen wasn’t noted as a comic actor when the movie came out. That was why he was cast. He was always the super serious guy in every movie he made earlier in his career.
That was one of the “jokes” of the movie. His deadpan delivery like he was in a serious movie...

No one thought Leslie Nielsen was funny until he did "Airplane!".
Maybe Liam Neeson has unplumbed depths as well.
I kind of doubt it but would not be the first time I was wrong. Would not even be the first time today.
