Statham’s ‘A Working Man’ upsets ‘Snow White’ to take No. 1 at the box office

NEW YORK (AP) — In an unexpected upset, the Jason Statham thriller “A Working Man” took No. 1 at the box office, besting the rapidly declining “Snow White,” according to studio estimates Sunday.

Even after a lackluster debut, the Walt Disney Co.’s live-action remake was predicted to remain the top film in U.S. and Canadian theaters over the weekend. Instead, “Snow White,” plagued by bad buzz and backlash, nosedived in its second weekend and dropped 66%.

Amazon MGM Studios’ “A Working Man,” directed by David Ayer, beat expectations with a $15.2 million debut. Co-written by Sylvester Stallone, “A Working Man” reteams Statham and Ayer following last year’s successful “The Beekeeper” ($162 million worldwide). This time around, Statham plays a construction worker with an elite military past.

While reviews have been mixed and audiences only gave “A Working Man” a “B” CinemaScore, showing Statham has carved out something rare in the movie industry today: bankability. “A Working Man” opened similarly to “The Beekeeper,” which launched with $16.5 million.

The bigger headline might have been the fast erosion of ticket buyers’ appetite for “Snow White.” The film, directed by Marc Webb and starring Rachel Zegler, had been hoped to lift movie theaters after a painful start to 2025. Produced for more $250 million, the film has turned into a poisoned apple, with a two-week global haul of $143.1 million.

Next weekend, Warner Bros.’ “A Minecraft Movie,” is expected to win the weekend and will, like “Snow White,” target family audiences.

A trio of newcomers – A24’s “Death of a Unicorn,” Universal and Blumhouse’s “The Woman in the Yard,” and the Fathom’s “Chosen: The Last Supper” – also opened over the weekend, though none made a big impact.

“The Chosen: The Last Supper,” fared the best, with $11.5 million in 2,235 theaters.

The last film I watched in a theater was The Patriot, almost twenty-five years ago.

Reruns of a sixties soap opera would outdraw Snow Woke.

With a Jason Statham flick, you know what you’re getting.

The new Snow White not so much*.

*: although I would watch a move of Gal Gadot reading the phone book. Almost….

we watched “The Beekeeper” twice after it was streamable for free on amazon ... surprisingly, it’s a very engaging movie with fine production values and good story-telling ...

Disney will probably lose $500M on this. Whatever your reference that’s a lot of money!

The Beekeeper was a David Ayers flick and I’ve liked some of his other stuff - End of Watch and Fury. But Beekeeper was formulaic action even if well done.

Being politically correct overrides everything else, even if a storyline is a fairy tale and clearly fiction.

It also overrides Fun, Imagination and hope.

All the things that inspire aspiration to greatness.

Anything that might give a little girl the idea that she could be a princess and inspire a prince to love her and save her from an evil step mother must be squashed.

Any thing that might inspire a little boy tot heroics must be equally squashed.

Judy Jetson is not real. Switch over to the Cherry 2000 for a happy ending.

Why make the movie if the only thing it had to offer was nihilism?

I actually thought The Beekeeper was an excellent movie. Your disparaging remarks illustrate your narcissism more than being a critical review.

First they weren’t disparaging. On observation.

Second personal attacks are illustrate an inability to make coherent arguments.

I’ll flip it to you saying anyone that liked it clearly has an IQ below 90.

But that would be stupid.

Third, I didn’t say I didn’t like it. Just a silly plot I’ve seen before. We actually were having fun comparing scenes with other movies.

We like to watch bad dudes getting their butt kicked.

They kind of wasred Jeremy Irons. I was hoping his character got fleshed out more.

Opinions do not call for personL attacks.

I bet if you started a thread on the movie it would be 50/50. Knee jerkere once attacked me for liking the Godfather. No kidding.

Dont be ond of those.

Regards

Did they add some major city explosions or spaceships to the movie?

Chick lives with a bunch of dudes.
Evil witch gives her a poisoned apple.
She sleeps in a tower.
Prince dude gives her an apparently rapey kiss.
They get married(?) happily ever after!

What in that would cost $2.5MM to shoot? Much less $25MM? Or $250MM?!
