President George Washington’s original cabinet contained just four departments and department heads: Department of State, which was led by inaugural Secretary Thomas Jefferson, Department of the Treasury, which was conceived and headed up by Alexander Hamilton, Attorney General Edmund Randolph, and the Department of War, which was first led by distinguished Continental Army General Henry Knox.
The War Department existed until 1947, when it was initially split into the Department of the Army, the Department of the Air Force, and the Department of the Navy. Congress had previously established a Department of the Navy in 1798, which was under the War Department’s purview.
President Harry Truman proposed a unified department of national defense in order to better coordinate U.S. Military affairs after the Second World War. In July of 1947, Truman signed the National Security Act of 1947, which established the National Military Establishment (NME) and created several individual departments, including the National Security Council, the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the U.S. Air Force.
woke bishop All of these entities were placed under the control of the National Military Establishment, while the U.S. Senate confirmed James Forrestal as the first NME director a day after the department was established. In 1949, the NME was official renamed to the Department of Defense.
It is unclear whether the Trump Administration is seriously pursuing a name change at this time. Hegseth has yet to provide any follow-up details on the poll, while the DoD has yet to provide any formal press releases on the matter.
President Trump recently referred to the department as the Department of War in a Truth Social post, however, suggesting that a formal name change may indeed be pursued.

Department of War is a far more honest title than is Department of Defense. Did the Department of Defense ever defend our borders against invasion? No, they did not.

I am 100% in favor of a change to the Department of War, but note that for most of our history there was also a Department of the Navy of co-equal cabinet status with the War Department.
I would not wish the Navy to be subsumed into a War Department.
Is changing the name of the DOD worth the costs?
Leave it as is.
All our adversaries know it(DOD) is totally focused on keeping the USA safe from attack. We will destroy your entire society if necessary, to protect ours.

The goal is to defend the nation not get into wars so I don’t see them changing it to the Dept of War. But they do seem to be looking into a wide range of government reengineering topics which is healthy.
A military focused on winning is not a military focused on being on defense. War Department is calling a Spade a Spade (playing card slang). These are the guys who kill people, break things, and win. Train accordingly.
Float something else.
We don’t have a Kinetic Bomb.
Dept. of War is a more honest name. We need to have a new branch of the Armed services—the Border Guard, land version of the coast guard—goal—guard the borders. Have tanks, jets, robots, drones, etc...
Navy needs more ships. Take some vessels out of mothballs until we can build new ships. Convert old carriers to launch drones and helos. We need to get the rail guns to work, launch a fleet of Monitors with them and drones. Armored to take a beating and keep on fighting.
That said, at this moment, I'm more worried about the influence of the MIC.
They are looking for wars for us to fight in because it's "good for business".
