Miami-Dade cracks down on DMV appointment scalpers

A growing black market for driver's license appointments is costing residents both time and money, prompting local officials to take action.

Miami-Dade County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez revealed that a network of scalpers has been hoarding free DMV appointments and selling them for as much as $250.

Using bots, fake accounts and other tactics, these individuals manipulate the online booking system to secure large numbers of time slots, preventing legitimate customers from scheduling their visits.

"We know who they are and how they operate. We will not accept any appointment obtained through system abuse," Fernandez said in a statement.

"Our office is committed to ensuring that all residents have fair and equal access to services without interference from those seeking to exploit the system."

We know who they are and how they operate.

So you have checked their immigration status, arrested them charged them with fraud and or sued them into oblivion. No?

So a bot makes an appointment for “Jose Rodriguez” and the scalper sells that appointment slot. But then “Juan Garcia” shows up for the appointment. Does the DMV agent just let Juan take “Jose’s” appointed slot?

If the dmv system is so broke that scalpers can sell free appointments, the actual solution is to fix the system.

It’s so broke here in Maryland that it once took five trips and nine hours to register a car. A simple task that is their main job.

I’m thankful that I live in a small rural town where one can just drop by the DMV and walk up to the counter and take care of business right away.

If the offices are so badly run and understaffed that people are willing to pay $250 to skip the line, maybe the DMV needs to be fixed instead of the scalping. If the scalpers grab the spots and try to sell them with no one buying the slot, it should only take a minute to run through the no shows and get right to in person walk-ins.

In Ohio in the past couple decades I had to wait behind two people once. Other than that I had an open window or just a one person wait. Most plate renewals are handled online and you only need a license eye test every eight years (instead of every renewal at four years like previously)

My most complicated was getting a replacement title for my dad’s truck which was too old to be in the electronic title system. The clerk took my power of attorney, truck registration as proof of ownership quickly created a new title and ten minutes later I was ready to sell it. If the title had been in the computer it would probably have been under five minutes. I may complain about the Ohio government, but the BMV and title offices are on the ball.

They could add staff. Expand hours.

Or have separate locations for different transcations, one branch does only license, another does only car titles and regs.

Or, outsource. Maybe new car dealerships take on the role for reg and titles andl new plates and get a % of the transaction

” Does the DMV agent just let Juan take “Jose’s” appointed slot?”

The DMV agents name is probably Jesus so why not?

Most people here now go to third party processing companies and pay a fee. Incompetence reigns at every level of government here.

Maybe they should raise sales tax to 8%. Oh wait, that’s what these commies are doing.

A simple task that is their main job.

In many states, it is not their main job. Their main job is to turn you away.

My daughter needs to renew her license and get real ID. I did mine through AAA a couple of years ago and I was in and out in no time. She tried to get an appointment today and nothing was available at any of their offices until June.

I was at the DMV in Van Nuys, California back in Jan 2020 and as I was going thru the various stops to renew my license I asked one of the clerks how many people go thru here and she said between 700 to 900 people a day...

She carefully looked over my utility bills and state birth certificate, they do not accept the one you get from the hospital and I asked why and she said they see forgeries all the time. She also said people show up and when at the last stop where you have your photo taken someone else replaces the initial person meaning an illegal.

Wow, a different person jumping in for the photo.

In Idaho, you do your paperwork at the counter and get your photo taken right then and there eliminating that cheat.
