A remarkable piece of royal history has stepped out of the shadows, as Queen Mary of Denmark wore a 200-year-old tiara adorned with ancient stones for the very first time during a state banquet in Finland.
The headpiece, originally owned by Queen Caroline Amalie, had been hidden away for over 140 years, making its debut a genuine showstopper at the glittering event hosted by Finnish President Alexander Stubb.
Historic Cameo gemstones: Rare treasures from Pompeii resurface
The Danish royal family revealed that the 11 gemstones on the slim gold band were collected by King Christian VIII himself, who ventured to Rome and the excavations at Pompeii between 1819 and 1821. Far from today’s diamond-heavy designs, this tiara “reflects the classicist taste of the time” and was once intended for everyday wear rather than grand ceremonies. Alongside it, Queen Mary wore a matching bracelet containing stone sourced from the summit of Mount Vesuvius—accompanied by a heartfelt note the king once penned for Caroline Amalie.
Glamorous comeback: Queen Mary’s historic Tiara reclaims the spotlight
In stepping out with these historic jewels, Queen Mary is the first to don them in well over a century, pairing the tiara and bracelet with a black Jesper Høvring gown detailed in gold. The occasion marks the second time in recent weeks she has opted for regal headwear and a show-stopping gown, following her appearance at the annual Evening Party for Art and Culture at Christiansborg Castle in late February. Royal watchers have drawn parallels between Queen Mary’s recent sartorial choices and those of Princess Kate, noting that Mary wore a pink sequined Jenny Packham dress also owned by the British princess.
As royal jewellery enthusiasts continue to celebrate this unearthing of long-lost heirlooms, they’re also reminded of another recent mystery: the discovery that Princess Margaret’s missing tiara had been with Queen Azizah of Malaysia for decades, unbeknown to her. For now, though, all eyes remain on Queen Mary and her newly unveiled cameo-style treasures—once hidden in royal storage, and now shining again under the lights of a state banquet.
Here's a photo of Princess Kate and her children. Enjoy.
Oh, you are one of the “do it for the children” people. I guess because someone has children they can be bad or corrupt.
Grow up, that is nothing but a false appeal to emotion which shows how badly you have lost the argument.
Guess in your world view if someone has children they can go on to commit crimes against humanity, because you know, hey look they have children. You seriously thought that was making a point?
They’re all so beautiful. Not useful at all, but eye candy.
Wow, Is that an uncut ruby in QE2’s photo?
Who is Queen Mary?
It’s quite pretty. Roman, understated.
I tried on some of those Burger King crowns today but none were size 8 1/4?
Awesome site! Thanks!
Oh, thanks. I see that the other photo was angled so that you can't see the articulation of the separate gems making up the centerpiece. Wow. If I don't come back as a lap kitty, maybe I could come back as a court jeweler.*
* (just kidding -- Christians don't have to come back)
