Markets tank as Trump declares a national emergency amid shocking new Canada tariffs and 51st state threat

President Donald Trump declared a national emergency on electricity in the United States and doubled the tariffs on aluminum and steel from Canada after retaliatory tariffs from America's neighbor to the north.

The president, in a lengthy post on his Truth Social account on Tuesday, also threatened to 'permanently shut down' the Canadian auto sector.

The only thing to make his tariffs stop is for Canada to become the 51st state, he noted as he ramps up his trade war.

In response, the stock market dropped over 500 points as nervous investors worry about a potential recession.

The increase in tariffs, from 25% to 50%, will go into affect on Wednesday, Trump said.

'Based on Ontario, Canada, placing a 25% Tariff on 'Electricity' coming into the United States, I have instructed my Secretary of Commerce to add an ADDITIONAL 25% Tariff, to 50%, on all STEEL and ALUMINUM COMING INTO THE UNITED STATES FROM CANADA, ONE OF THE HIGHEST TARIFFING NATIONS ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD,' Trump declared.

'I will shortly be declaring a National Emergency on Electricity within the threatened area,' he added.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford put a 25% tariff on Canadian electricity to Michigan, New York and Minnesota on Monday in response to earlier tariffs from Trump.

Ford, a conservative politician who runs Canada's most populous province, says he's ready to 'shut the electricity off completely' if America continues to 'escalate.'

Trump's fury continued in a second post to his Truth Social account, where he warned Canada will pay a historically big 'financial price' for its electricity tariff. Many states in the Northeast buy supplemental energy from Canada.

Funny, my wife and I stayed at a small farm up in Vermont some years back, and after listening to the woman who ran the farm disparage the Vermont state government, I concluded she was a solid conservative, and I had an excellent discussion with her.

Her condemnation was acid.

This was sometime after Vermont passed their green energy stupidity, that mandated by some year (probably 2030, knowing them as I do) that 100% of the energy produced or purchased by the utilities in the state had to be renewable.

Currently, Vermont Electric Co-op receives about 19 megawatts of energy from Canada, making up approximately 40 percent of the region’s usage.

Vermont is a beautiful state, but it is run by blithering idiots.

I think Mark Steyn described it as a methamphetamine wasteland, dotted with ski resorts.

Regarding tariffs, the President must do what he needs to do.

Don't know what he has in mind with the "51st. State" threat.

Canada is an integral part of The Commonwealth. The Canadians should decide if they wish to change that.

Trump is basically waging economic warfare to force Canadians to bend the knee and accept annexation. He is literally stating as such on his Truth Social account. It is pure mercentile imperialism and bullying. I cannot believe that American Conservatives, who used to be about upholding liberty and justice, are cheering this crap on.

no one has said you sucked on monkey tits as a baby so don’t go all hairy assed.

Look at the comments above. People are easily confused. Not least the canadians.

I get that you take the side of people who say that Trump is just negotiating for a better trade deal and fewer drugs and illegals coming over the border. And i would have agreed with until this latest escalation.

I also get that if Canada fights back sufficiently hard against the USA —it will be a better country.

Trump likes to get things in motion. I’m just saying that I’m not if favor of the USA merging with Canada as one of the possible outcomes.

I try to think of President Trump as an iceberg-------80% of what he is about is not visible.

In the case of Canada- I hope so.

Trust.....he has the good of the country at heart. His only motive.

He did not need to subject himself to the slings and arrows of politics.

No he didn’t, and in many ways he is dealing with issues that needed to be dealt with domestically, but when it comes to foreign policy he is deranged. He is completely destroying trust with allies and whilst his “trolling” of Canadians might look hilarious to MAGA supporters, his allies and partners, who are a vital part of America’s security and trading economy, are viewing things very differently, and I think MAGA supporters are genuinely of the belief that throwing America’s weight around declaring trade wars and “joking” about annexing allies is going to get it’s allies and trading partners to kneel to them and bow with unconditional fealty. It’s that kind of arrogance that is going to destroy the US as a superpower and leader of the free world.

I take your point about foreign policy. Hope he does not overplay his hand. You think he already has.

My friends in the UK are not impressed - especially with VP Vance saying the Britain has never fought any wars in the last ?? years. Do not know the exact quote.

I pray every day for God to keep them both safe and give them wisdom and patience.

FRegards.
