A February 27 autopsy of Gene Hackman reveals the 95-year-old Oscar winner died of a combination of “advanced Alzheimer’s disease” and severe heart disease, the Santa Fe Medical Examiner announced today.

“It is reasonable to conclude that Mr. Hackman died on February 17,” Dr. Heather Jarrell said in a press conference with Santa Fe Sherif Adan Mendoza and other county officials. “He was in very poor health,” Dr. Jarrell also noted of Hackman, adding that there was evidence that he hadn’t eaten for a number of days. Ms. Arakawa is assumed to have died on or around February 11, officials estimated.

some elderly people absolutely hate retirement homes and would never agree to live in one, no matter what. when i ran into this sentiment, i did not inquire why, but i suspect that it has something to do with dignity in death. before dying, they do not heed to worry about being embarrassed by not being able to take care of themselves and not being a drag to everyone around them. after dying, they of course do not care what happens to their mortal bodies.

My very elderly parents moved into their house about 50 years ago. The original owner had medical issues and couldn't walk up the stairs to the second floor bedroom. An addition was built on the side of of the house as a new bedroom. The attic was was converted to a living space for a live in caretaker. There was also a buzzer system installed for requesting help from the caretaker. This was a 2 bedroom house until upgrades were made back in the day...

No doubt Gene had both conditions but someone with end stage Alzheimer’s / HD isn’t walking around on his won, I know first hand from two family members. He died of dehydration / starvation IMO.

Glad you made it through the medical challenges! Recognized your username from when you left Cali for Idaho. I can’t believe it was that long ago!

“possibly due to cleaning such a large home by herself?”

Being a primary care giver is physically draining. For a care giver for someone with diminished cognitive ability much more so.

We tend not to realize we can’t do everything we used to do when we were younger. It’s important for children to be aware and intervene when that happens. The care giver may not be able to make the leap.

My sister was 64 when she passed last year.

She lived about a mile away, but avoided us. We would text and occasionally talk on the phone, but she turned down every invitation for dinner, holidays, birthdays, etc.

She lost her job in January and didn’t tell us. We found out but didn’t tell her we knew. She would tell us when she was good and ready.

It seems she stopped paying her bills in March. Didn’t tell us she was having financial issues. We had helped her pay her mortgage one month the year before and never brought up paying us back. We could have helped, if we had known.

In mid-May a guy came by our house looking to repo my sister’s car. This was surprising to us. We drove over to place. She didn’t answer the door. She didn’t answer her phone. We could hear her dogs barking. We called the police.

The paramedics arrived first and discovered her body in the bathroom. Her neighbor’s video doorbell showed us she hadn’t left her apartment for two weeks. Normally she left to walk her dogs a couple of times a day.

Her body was decomposed to a point where the paramedics didn’t want me to see her. They told us the bathroom door was closed, and that the dogs hadn’t eaten her, but it had been two weeks and one of the dogs was rather fat.

She died penniless and alone, all by her choice. Such a waste.

He had three kids by Wife #1. They broke up and he married Wife #2, more than 30 years his junior. Wife #2 was probable the same age as his kids. I Imagine the kids were upset about dad treating mom like that I read there was some estrangement in the past.

That is my guess. At 95 I doubt he had any friends left.

My mom developed dementia when Covid first started, I had to move into her home and rent mine out!! There was NO WAY I was going to put her in a facility with NO ONE allowed to visit ect. I have to tell you it was the MOST difficult task I have ever taken on in my life!! It was 3 year before she passed she was 92 when she passed!! I had a hospice nurse visiting 3 times a week to advise me on her care I can not believe that NO ONE was visiting that home to advise the wife on his care!! If a nurse had been visiting the home the nurse would have also realized just how sick the wife was and gotten her help!! They had PLENTY of money WHY would the wife do this???

Advanced Alzheimer’s restricts mobility. Ex’s G-father was bed bound for 20 years. Had no idea of the identity the women that visited him, fed him, washed him, talked to him, every day, for 20 years. (His wife.) He couldn’t talk, couldn’t focus, would panic when he saw what was, to him, a stranger. It was a horror show.

Someone who locks a pet in a closet unless its a goldfish ... well, never mind.

And those cages / kennels. Why bother to have a pet?

*** I’ve heard that some of these stars don’t handle money well. Similar to some professional athletes who make tons of money, they need to save for the day when they aren’t getting multi million dollar movie deals.***

Brings to mind Hunter Biden, though he had zero talent, and a huge drug problem. Someone made him think he would be set for life. Though I think that somewhere deep in his heart, he knew he was a grifter, and nothing else.

“It sounds like Gene and his wife had bunkered in and, after 20 years of this, had become social isolates.”

In an article Hubby read, it said they were “private”.

It also said they lived in a gated community, and those places often have security people. If it were us, we’d have someone like that check on us daily.

Such a tragedy.

As long as no foul-play, either way is a terrible way to go.

“I wonder why she didn’t seek medical attention for herself before she became incapacitated.”

I think she did. Apparently, she had been to CVS that day for a prescription. (Maybe the pills that were found spilled next to her?)

And I read that once you notice symptoms affecting lungs, you can be a goner in 24 hours.

This is what I’m asking. I can’t even imagine this happening in my life, and I hope it never does.

Local news (I’m in New Mexico) said that the dog was recovering from a surgical procedure. It may have been crated in the closet so it was close by while recovering.
