A February 27 autopsy of Gene Hackman reveals the 95-year-old Oscar winner died of a combination of “advanced Alzheimer’s disease” and severe heart disease, the Santa Fe Medical Examiner announced today.
“It is reasonable to conclude that Mr. Hackman died on February 17,” Dr. Heather Jarrell said in a press conference with Santa Fe Sherif Adan Mendoza and other county officials. “He was in very poor health,” Dr. Jarrell also noted of Hackman, adding that there was evidence that he hadn’t eaten for a number of days. Ms. Arakawa is assumed to have died on or around February 11, officials estimated.

He had severe alzheimers. He didnt stop eating deliberately.
The saddest thing is that no one cared enough about them to check up on them for so long.
They should have had a live-in nurse.
He had three kids by Wife #1. They broke up and he married Wife #2, more than 30 years his junior. Wife #2 was probable the same age as his kids. I Imagine the kids were upset about dad treating mom like that I read there was some estrangement in the past.
I’m sure the dog starved to death in its kennel.
wouldn’t the dog bark and bark with no water, no food?
gene would be too demented to do anything
don’t know about his wife
Fiends in Prescott, AZ & all their cats are inside due to predators. I would assume it would be similar in New Mexico. They have a problem with pack rats and you have to put lights around your cars if they sit outside.
There were children. Hard to believe children or grandchildren never checked on them. Every day.
Well my dad told me to never contact him again a few years before he passed. Family relationships are difficult sometimes.
When my FIL had Alzheimers, we learned that in very advanced stages they sometimes can forget to eat.
RIP
There is that.
I would imagine that the dog probably did bark, but Gene wouldn’t know what to do about it due to his advanced Alzheimer’s.
February 11 - Betsy Arakawa died from hantavirus.
February 14-15 - Rule of thumb, dogs can go about 72 hours (3 days) without water, so the dog probably died around these dates.
February 18 - Gene Hackman died from severe heart disease, advanced Alzheimer’s disease was a contributing factor.
Curious that a rich and famous celebrity would not have someone at least keeping an eye on him.
From what I can tell, Gene was a bit of a recluse for the last 20 years. “Honey - I know I’m losing my marbles, but please promise me you won’t have any strangers coming into our house to take care of me.”
Word is it was hantavirus
The report said, that she died of hantavirus disease.
That can kill anybody, regardless of age.
Looks like she got sick, thought that it was flu, did not consult doctor, and eventually died, trying to take Tylenol, as she felt very sick!
Gene then died of Alzheimer. He just could not take care about himself, obviously.
Very sad story, but all natural. And not that unusual, recently.
They lived too much a secluded life.
Conclusion: make sure somebody checks on you, sometimes!
They died apart by days? They will never ever be able to connect those two dots with any persuasion.
She passed perhaps a week earlier of Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, neither of them from carbon monoxide. He was ailing, and after his wife and caregiver passed, he wasn’t able to even call for help or perhaps even recognize his need to do so.

I knew somebody, who died home, in sofa, watching TV.
They found him weeks later, still sitting in sofa, with TV still on!
Loner. The neighbors finally realized something is wrong.
