A February 27 autopsy of Gene Hackman reveals the 95-year-old Oscar winner died of a combination of “advanced Alzheimer’s disease” and severe heart disease, the Santa Fe Medical Examiner announced today.
“It is reasonable to conclude that Mr. Hackman died on February 17,” Dr. Heather Jarrell said in a press conference with Santa Fe Sherif Adan Mendoza and other county officials. “He was in very poor health,” Dr. Jarrell also noted of Hackman, adding that there was evidence that he hadn’t eaten for a number of days. Ms. Arakawa is assumed to have died on or around February 11, officials estimated.

Did the two dogs eat them?
Hanta virus pulmonary issue on the wife. Dog-—?
My mom passed at 83 and for her last week she would not eat. She just wasn’t hungry and she didn’t want a feeding tube. She was always underweight so she didn’t have a lot of energy reserves to live on. She was made comfortable and passed after several days. So I could see a heartbroken Mr. Hackman who wasn’t in the best of health just quit eating after his wife died.
Yes, kudos to his wife to look after him. It is surprising that they didn’t have a daily caregiver coming to the house to do cleaning, laundry, cooking and chores.
I wonder if she took care of everything around the house. No housekeeper, no medical caregivers, children never visited, etc.
She might have caught the hantavirus while cleaning up outside, clearing weeds or brush.
One needs to seek medical attention immediately when symptoms start. The virus has a 40% fatality rate.
Their private lives ended very publicly.
And not just because he was a famous actor.
Because they also seemed to have no regular family or friends that gave a damn in return..
She shut the dog up in the bathroom closet because it kept disappearing.
It was a yellow labracadabrador. (rimshot)
>This ain’t funny you.
Yeah, yer right.
Gene Hackman cause of death revealed as sheriff says his wife died from rare virus linked to rodents a week before he did
Problem with outdoor cats in that area, is that they come across dead rodents and bring plague fleas back home. It happened near my place a few years ago.
Gene had children. Where the hell were they?
Well if he suffered severe Alzheimer’s he may not have been able to take care of himself. If she put the dog in the crate in the closet and then had a heart attack... he could end up wandering around for days before he ultimately perished, too.
Very surprising they did not have someone full-time or at least every day to come in and visit.
Yes, my grandmother had suffered a stroke. She was still conscious and, per the caregivers’ and attending family accounts, could follow instructions and conversations. I was away in college and didn’t talk to her during that time, so I can’t judge her mental acuity beyond that. But at the end, she just gave up and refused to eat. She passed in a couple of days. My grandfather had been dead for years. Two sons and one of the daughters were close enough that they visited daily. She was well attended.
It sounds like Gene and his wife had bunkered in and, after 20 years of this, had become social isolates. It happens. I’m still surprised that they didn’t have someone coming in, but people do odd things.
It is also a good idea, in places like Santa Fe with rodent problems, to have a regular pest control contract.
If you don't stay on top of pest you will have problems.
He was 95...he died of old age. Shxt happens.
“Well, people aged 64 are not THAT young.”
Well, for what it’s worth, it’s been mentioned that Mrs. Hackman has a living mother who’s in her 90s. A lot of Japanese women are graced with longevity. Yoko Ono is 92, and that’s despite a long prior history as a smoker.
“”when they will release the cause of death of his wife.””
Hantavirus.
The groundskeepers or gardeners came in every couple weeks, apparently. That is who found them. But their job wasn’t to look after their welfare.
Wasn't it just a few months ago we saw pictures of Hackman getting into the drivers seat of his SUV?
Yes but they had a really good run despite the close out.
“Death with indignity”
