Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s religious beliefs do not alter the current status of the United States as an unfriendly country toward Russia. His remarks came after Rubio appeared on television with an ash-marked cross on his forehead, symbolizing the start of Lent.
Speaking to reporters, Peskov emphasized that Washington is not a friendly partner to Moscow at this time. However, he noted that efforts are ongoing to restore and revive bilateral relations. Despite this, he asserted that the broader political reality remains unchanged.
When asked about Rubio’s public religious expression, Peskov clarified that personal faith is an individual right, but it does not influence geopolitical dynamics or the current strained relations between Russia and the United States.

As a Torah literalist, do you also accept the rest of the Tanakh? Namely the prophets (Jeremiah, Isaiah, etc.) and the other writings (Song of Solomon etc.)?
Interesting religious position of yours - it is more in line with the Sadducee view of the 2nd temple period.
But then, like in the case of the Sadducees, there are question - the Torah doesn’t describe the afterlife much (or at all I think) - so that’s elaborated in the writings and prophets and of course in the Talmud. How do you reconcile these? Do you believe in the afterlife or more like the Sadducee point of view?
As noted in my post quite close above, we Jews need a robust and healthy Christianity with us to defend Western Civ from the moslem hordes.

well, not quite - the number of Russians who IDENTIFY as Eastern Orthodox has increased (31% to 72%), but the church attendance has actually dropped in line with the drop in the USA.
This seems to be in line with the way that the ROC is positioned - that to be Russian you are a member of the ROC and vice-versa.

In all my years of liturgical churching, last Wednesday was the first time I saw my pastor mark the cross on the right hand of any who asked. It seems that this is meant as a rebuttal to the mark of the beast, which will be placed either on the forehead or the right hand. Since the imposition of ashes is a tradition based on Scripture and not a specific requirement of Scripture (such as the Eucharist or baptism), how the tradition is done only matters to the extent that it is designed to honor Christ.
MayflowerMadam, one thing the other explanations didn't mention is that the ashes are supposed to be from the burning of the palm fronds used the previous Palm Sunday. It is a reminder that those who shout Hosanna are the same people who put Christ on the cross--that it is our sins that make Him have to die for us.

I quite agree the Torah is not focused on an afterlife. To well understand the Jewish view, I get near universal acknowledgement and approval among Jews when I make the summation: “Life! It’s the thing!” Everyone lights up and agrees. You can feel it viscerally in Tel Aviv. Rockets may be inbound, and you’re smiling in the radical reality of living history now with your brethren.

I think it is also odd that if some one wanted to repent and follow the ritual of Jer 6:22-26 (if you wanted to call it a ritual) they would go all out and roll in a pile of ashes and put on a sack cloth and go out into the public so everybody knows they are repenting. But when was the last time you've seen some one do that, I haven't but maybe I don't understand this Lent/repentance stuff, or maybe I was born on the wrong side of the tracks per say.
Maybe if Rubio knelt, faced Mecca and said a prayer he would have received a warmer response, both from Russia and this nitwit writer.

There isn’t much here to work with. The Russian comment is simply rational, as usual. The headline, combined with the writer’s identity (as pointed out by others at FR) is more interesting. Perhaps the author does not want to see a Christian alliance.

The older tradition in the west (Europe) is for the priest to sprinkle a pinch of ashes onto the head (hair) of the member of the lay faithful. “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” (See Genesis 3:19)
The practice in America, as you can see, has diverged.

I was toward the back op the line and I didn’t even have to wipe my forehead before going to bed. The ashes had already faded.
