The Garden Thread - March, 2025
March 1,2025 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

Posted on 03/01/2025 7:23:36 AM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.

When I was in High School I worked in a Pizzaria for about as year, and they want the gluten dough, the reason for the 00 flour.

I think my choice of flour had a lot to do with it and the tough biscuits. I will try again with the Lily White Flour at Easter, maybe orange and cranberry with an orange glaze, or maybe currents and powered sugar. I might get wild and do the Matcha Scone here!

Will decide later. (Mrs. Pete will rejoice!)

Chocolate cake...you are so evil so evil!!

I will copy the recipe for a celebration after I lose 20 lbs from eating the scones! (Thank you!)

I have found a source at a place that I occasionally shop and will be trying the White Lily Flour.

Noted and thanks!

There are many yews needing trimming @ my Mom’s old place (prep for selling it), so I’ll have plenty to experiment with.

The sentimental aspect is considerable, as that was our home when I was a teen, and the memories of hide-and-go-seek, etc., amongst the yews, are still with me.

In our case, a good hedge along the NE side of our property would help with road noise and add privacy.

BTW, there’s no way I can afford enough yews to start that hedge, so, you retirement holdings are unaffected! :-)

Lucky you! This clay we have around here is awful, and what little organic matter is on top is mostly from hickory trees....

I use a battery powered reciprocating saw for lighter stuff. It came with 2 batteries, so it will run for a while. Over 2” I switch to my Dad’s old Stihl electric chain saw.

Broiled Salmon / Brown Sugar Glaze / 4 Servings
Terrific dinner, really quick, all in one pan. Broiling gives best caramelization

Ing 4-8 oz salmon fillets, asparagus, broccolini, cherry tomatoes, 1 tbl ol/oil S/p.
Glaze 1 tbl ea Dijon, mayo, 2 tbl br/sugar 1/4 tsp cayenne

Steps Place oven shelf 6" from heat source. Arrange on sprayed tray asparagus, broccolini, cherry tomatoes. Drizzle w/ olive oil, s/p. Wedge salmon between veg. S/p. Slather Glaze on salmon tops and sides. Broil 8 min to caramelize, inside is blush pink--don't flip. Rest 2 min then serve.

Note: use pencil-thin asparagus/broccolini to ensure they cook. Cut if needed. You'll have extra Glaze w/ small salmon; roll cherry tomatoes in it before cooking. A good side is rice tossed w/ garlic butter.

BTW, I stumbled across this while poking around on the web, dunno if it’s been posted before:

https://localfoodconnect.org.au/community-gardening/list-of-tomato-varieties/

19,000 varieties are listed. I’ll bet that list took a while to come up with...
