Feb. 26 (UPI) -- No one was injured, but many potatoes were lost, when a tractor-trailer hauling a load of curly fries caught fire on a Maine highway.

The York Fire Department responded alongside Kittery Fire crews when more than 30 calls came in to 911 reporting a truck on fire on southbound Interstate 95.

"It was quickly determined that the cargo was frozen curly french fries and not a hazardous material," the York Fire Department said on social media.

The firefighters used about 6,000 gallons of water to extinguish the flames, but the tractor-trailer and its spud snack cargo "were a total loss," firefighters wrote.

There were no injuries resulting from the fire.

Yes, but frozen potatoes don’t catch fire unless there is another fire to melt the cardboard boxes. Then maybe as the potato’s burn, it releases the starches that burn?

J. B. Pritzker was seen scurrying into the pile, with an extra-large bottle of ketchup.

Since these were processed i expect there is a lot of vegetable oil in them from the making of ‘curly fries.’ The fact that there is probably a low potato to air ratio in packed curly fries (as opposed to raw potatoes) might help the burning also.

Are there any fast food places that serve curly fries or are these mostly destined for grocery stores?

My guess - the fries were already partially cooked and had some oil on them already.

My mom always said Fries would clog things. Now they clogged the highway. Ok, pretty bad, but it’s the best I’ve got.

Good point. I was assuming that the potatos were raw and it didn’t make sense.
