According to a search warrant, obtained by TMZ, a Santa Fe detective who sought a search warrant wrote in his affidavit, he believes "the death of the two deceased individuals to be suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation because the reporting party found the front door of the residence unsecured and opened, deputies observed a healthy dog running loose on the property, another healthy dog near the deceased female, a deceased dog laying 10-15 feet from the deceased female in a closet of the bathroom, the heater being moved, the pill bottle being opened and pills scattered next to the female, the male decedent being located in a separate room of the residence, and no obvious signs of a gas leak."

Gene's wife, Betsy, was found in the bathroom on the ground near the countertop, laying on her right side. The deputy saw a black space heater near her head. The deputy believed the heater could have fallen in the event Betsy abruptly fell to the ground.
The deputy also noticed an orange prescription bottle on the countertop, which was open with pills scattered on the countertop. It appears the she had been dead for some time, because the body was in a state of decomposition with bloating in her face and mummification in her hands and
Gene was found in a separate room off the kitchen. He was fully clothed and suspected he may have suddenly fallen, because his sunglasses were found next to his body.
The fire department came and advised they did not see any signs of carbon monoxide leak or poisoning.

Thank you!
If this is one of those forensic shows look for an impatient heir directly in line. (I mean ninety five, geeez already!)
lol
Uncle is 95..plays tennis and golf.
Mom is 92. Still annoying :)
Sounds to me like he died and she didn’t want to be left behind. There were together for a long time. Dogs don’t last very long with no water or food.
“Uncle is 95..plays tennis and golf.

Amazing. My mom made it to 94. 93.5 good years.
Her older sister lasted to 104.
The weirdest story of the week.
👊
Wow! My parents made it to the mid 80s. My grandfathers died at 90 and 94. One grandmother died at 72, the other at 88. Both grandfathers had been farmers.
From the kennel? The dead dog was in the kennel.
I don't think natural gas or carbon monoxide leave much obvious evidence long after death. Natural gas is an asphyxiant by displacing oxygen in the air. It isn't poisonous by itself. Of course there is an explosion risk. Carbon monoxide is poisonous, but its visible symptoms don't last into decomposition of the body. Maybe lab samples in an autopsy can tell.
As the owner of three Malinois, I was curious about the life span for a dog without food or water. I found this:
“How Long Does It Take A Dog To Starve To Death
“Dogs are known for their strong survival instincts and ability to scavenge for food in the wild. However, when a dog is deprived of food for an extended period of time, it can lead to starvation and ultimately death. But how long does it actually take for a dog to starve to death?
“The answer to this question can vary depending on a variety of factors, including the size and breed of the dog, its age, overall health, and how much body fat it has stored. In general, a healthy adult dog can survive without food for about 3-5 days, while a puppy or senior dog may only be able to survive for 1-2 days without food. However, it’s important to note that water is just as crucial for a dog’s survival as food, and a dog can only survive for about 3-5 days without water as well.
“To gain a better understanding of this topic, let’s explore 7 interesting trends related to how long it takes a dog to starve to death.
1. Breed and size play a significant role: Larger breeds of dogs tend to have more body fat and muscle mass, which can help them survive longer without food. On the other hand, smaller breeds of dogs may not have as much body fat or muscle mass to rely on, making them more susceptible to starvation.

Sounds like the crime scene was staged, after the fact.
Ain’t we all
When Gene Hackman discovered her he either had a heart attack or he committed suicide with the pills.
Just keep Monk away !
Check the life insurance policy and Will to see who had most to gain
“Why is the dog dead, however?”
If one of the dogs are the same pills that were scattered on the floor is an easy explanation. One of my beagles wI’ll eat anything that drops to the floor including nonfood things like pills she went after a dish pod I dropped once. She just assumes if daddy drops it, it must be food.
Dead for two weeks? Lots of possibilities, but in the picture I saw, the house was large, in the Hollywood royalty style. They may not have had live-in staff, but I’m surprised that there was not at least a housekeeper, or a cleaning crew, who didn’t come by regularly. Very elderly people sometimes become hermits, especially if dementia sets in, but the wife was only in her 60’s. Too young to be a hermit bunkering into a couple of rooms with most of the house unused.
At 95 he may no longer have been mobile, but he was fully dressed. Obviously investigators will want to know about ther activity level, how often they (or at least she) got out, how they handled grocery shopping, cooking, housekeeping, etc. If a regular staff person who was there routinely has gone missing, well ....
But the wife being surrounded by spilled pills suggests suicide. A medical event is possible, but if they died about the same time, intentionality on someone’s part seems likely.
