A 16-year-old boy let out a keening wail as he collapsed in court after being told he would be tried for murder as an adult and denied bail.
Sean Simpson is charged with the shooting murder of 16-year-old Zaquavious Dawkins last month in Gastonia, North Carolina.
The alleged teen killer broke down in court, sobbing and screaming as he learned he would not be released on bail and will have to face the law as an adult.
Simpson began wiping his eyes as the judge could be heard saying 'hold without bond,' footage obtained by QueenCityNews shows.
The teenager, whose wrists were cuffed together, then staggered to one side as he began to faint.
He was prevented from falling to the floor by a deputy standing next to him, who let Simpson rest on his shoulder.
Simpson then opened his mouth to let out an anguished cry and leaned forward heavily as the two deputies on either side of him held on to him.
A new state law enacted by North Carolina in December 2024 means that 16 and 17 year-olds can now be charged as adults for certain crimes, including murder.
Simpson is believed to be one of the first teenagers to be tried under the new law.
Simpson allegedly fired on Dawkins and another victim as they walked on a road following a schoolyard fight, as reported by the Gaston Gazette.
He is also accused of attempted first-degree murder for shooting at the other unnamed victim, who was injured but survived.
Dawkin's family was also seen overcome with emotion during the court hearing on January 29.

Quite.
Parents aren’t doing their kids any favors with these names. SMH
Momma listened to “The Name Game” once too often...
Judy! Judy, judy bo budy banana fanna fo fody
Fee fy mo mudy, judy!
Lana! Lana, lana bo bana banana fanna fo fana
Fee fy mo mana, lana!
Come on everybody!
I say now let’s play a game
I betcha I can make a rhyme
Out of anybody’s name.
The first letter of the name,
I treat it like it wasn’t there.
But a b or an f
Or an m will appear.
And then I say bo add a b then
I say the name and banana fanna and a fo
And then I say the name again with an f very plain
And a fee fy and a mo
And then I say the name again with an m this time
And there isn’t any name that I can’t rhyme
Thanks. I re-read it and saw he was just told he was going to be charged as an adult. That’s a far cry from the trial being over.
I guess when I read he squealed and slumped over I figured he had just been sentenced to prison for 30 years.
Gotta quit the fast skim of articles!
Too bad, if he is found guilty in court, that Sean Simpson is not likely to be sentenced to be executed. Then he could really squeal.
Thug life ain’t so great now is it.
Corollary: Don’t start wars you can’t afford to lose.
Maybe he be a-cryin’ because one of his possible papas told him that his cell partner may be a Mr. Ben Dover.
He’d better get used to squealing.
Good grief ... the anchor says the hearing “was tough for both families.” She’s framing the story to create sympathy for the accused killer. I guarantee you it’s a lot more “tough” for the victim’s family because, you know, he’s DEAD!!
It would seem that Sean Simpson has reached the “Find Out” stage.
He’s likely to turn 21 in prison doing life without parole ...
But in his case, I’m not convinced that “mama” (or anybody else) really “tried”.
Momma listened to “The Name Game” once too often..
Well at least she didn’t name him “Chuck”.
Primal response.
The suspected perpetrator is named “Sean”.
I was referring to the victim obviously....or at least I thought it was
Thanks ... wasn’t sure.

No, you’re doing fine. Once you’ve been here 10+ years (and you have), you only have to glance at the headline before commenting. And your comments don’t even have to apply to the article.
