Vulnerable House Republican warns against benefit cuts

Pennsylvania Rep. Rob Bresnahan is the latest swing-district Republican to issue a warning over deep spending cuts GOP leaders are targeting for key safety net programs in a bill to enact President Donald Trump's massive domestic agenda.

“I ran for Congress under a promise of always doing what is best for the people of Northeastern Pennsylvania,” said Bresnahan in a statement Friday. “If a bill is put in front of me that guts the benefits my neighbors rely on, I will not vote for it. Pennsylvania’s Eighth District chose me to advocate for them in Congress. These benefits are promises that were made to the people of NEPA and where I come from, people keep their word.”

A VAT that literally went to the debt only might work IF they ensure it doesn’t end up in the general fund.

“the notion that you are going to cut a trillion dollars and not accidentally hit some “bone” is a standard of perfection that cannot be met in the real world.”

Medical costs are about half that of that in the USA in Western Europe.

******

One of thing to do is change taxes from fixed rates to program cost-related rates.

If Congress votes for $6 billion/year to spread perversion globally, it thinks that is without a cost.

******

If Americans want European-level handouts, they need to expect to pay European level taxation.

What about VA benefits? I’d watch that space. One proposal is drop the VA benefits if they get retirement checks. Another is income max. They already drop you if you make 170K a year. What does that have to do with getting hurt in the military. Also new veterans will lose 30 percent of their social security beginning 2024 if they receive any amount.

The problem is that everybody wants to maximize their “benefits” and minimize their taxes.

It is a classic game theory problem that used to be given a lot of study in academia by serious people (before DEI got rid of most of them).

What we want are “win win” solutions.

That requires very clever people getting very creative.

No government on the planet has done it yet.

In 1775-1776 people in the British North American colonies pledged to risk everything— their lives, their fortunes , and their sacred honor to create a nation where individuals could live as free men and women. This Contressman is not one of these people.

You may not understand the details.

#1 There is an income limit for VA healthcare. It differs by dependent number. For single it is up around $65ishK.

#2 That income limit is eliminated if the veteran has a minimum of 10% (or more) service connected injury/disability.

#3 Veterans collecting a pension from military retirement do have their injury compensation reduced. This has always been so. It’s not a new proposal.

#4 I have heard no proposals to reduce VA injury benefit for Social Security. Might be out there. Odds near zero. Though the way that is worded . . . “new veterans” is not clear. I asked chatGPT and it says there is no connection between VA disability/injury benefits and SS. But, it noted something I did not think of. People on SSDI (Social Security Disability) cannot make outside income above $XXXXX. GPT notes that VA disability benefits are not counted within that $XXXXX.

#5

Stop with the phony laugh. So this politician isn't a lifer yet. What I find odd is you seem more than eager to support politicians after they've hoodwinked and ripped off for years.

After this epic fraud fest and looting the tax payers, only a fool would trust any of them at this point. From this point forward, they'll be required to EARN my trust. Until then, they're ALL suspects to me.

I just find it ridiculous for you to run amok on information you don’t know. It used to be frowned upon to outright lie. I guess it’s new America.

Deep cuts in benefits spending need to be overmatched by reduction in out-of -pocket costs of those "benefits"; especially the exhorbitally ballooned chsarges of medical practitioners, their hospital charges, and the overwhelming price of prescription substances.

Seniors who spent their lives saving for the no-employment future have been caught flatfoot by spending-driven inflation and zero- or negative-return interest on their savings or investments.

Those who were permitted--even seduced--to spend (credit cards, unbacked loans) with money they did not have ( and could never repay from earnings) created a demand that inflated everything for those whose prudence brought shame for the case where their savings trusted to banks or investments could never cover their basic needs.

Shame, shame, shame!

General Dynamics in Scranton is one of the biggest beneficiaries of the U.S. “welfare for white people” program that is supplying artillery shells to Ukraine.
