Most Harvard Students Do Not Feel Comfortable Sharing Controversial Opinions in Class, Survey Finds

Only one-third of Harvard’s last graduating class felt comfortable expressing their opinions about controversial topics during their time at the College, the University’s 2024 senior survey found, reporting a 13 percent decrease from the Class of 2023.

The full survey results are not public, but were partially included in a report issued last week by the Classroom Social Compact Committee, convened by Faculty of Arts and Sciences Dean Hopi E. Hoekstra last spring in response to questions about the state of free speech on campus.

The committee — co-chaired by Economics professor David I. Laibson ’88 and History professor Maya R. Jasanoff ’96 — wrote in their report that despite “near-universal support for the principle of free speech,” there is disagreement about how Harvard “can support open expression in practice.”

The headline is basically stating, the 2/3rds afraid are radical dems, maybe they are moderate and conservative.

Don't know, but Harvard is a radical democrat sanctuary.

Faculty and staff would be just as hesitant. I work in higher education and essentially you have a conservative underground. You don’t speak openly of your beliefs or they will go after you.

That being said if you come to my office and start your leftist prattle I will return fire verbally with both barrels. I don’t go to leftist’s offices and rant on them and I won’t have it done to me. I had one liberal professor come in my office, start an argument and he told me to be quiet he didn’t want to hear me and started a lecture and I told him GET OUT! What do you mean he stuttered? I said you’re not going to come to my office, tell me to be quiet and lecture me, get the hell out of my office right now, OUT! He stuttered and huffed and left. In ten minutes he sent and email apologizing and then called me and apologized again and came by the next morning and apologized again.

He comes back to visit but leaves his politics at the door.

Only one-third of Harvard’s last graduating class felt comfortable expressing their opinions [the truth]

Fixed. I would've thought that number was closer to only 10% though.

It’s not just Harvard.

Yeah, it's good job training for the students because if they're smart, they'll keep their mouth shut in any government or korporate job they have.

Don’t be naive’. Any applicant will have to surrender passwords to all social media accounts to get past first interview. If you did not spew the requisite hatred you will be banned.

The only way past this is to liquidate all HR depts — that is the source of the first sign of cancer.

People who get into Harvard have learned that success in the world is a matter of keeping your head down and not rocking the boat.

Of course they do not.

Because what is perfectly normal today will become the thing they will hang you with tomorrow.

Define "woman". Until ten years ago the answer was "adult human female". There was nothing controversial about it. Over the past five years, as people have gone more and more insane, stating that simple biological fact will now get you not hired or maybe even fired. You and your family members will be threatened with bodily harm. And they may not stop at threats.

The little loonies that are running their cake holes are going to run into this in the future because what they thought was perfectly safe to say will become wrong think and double plus ungood.

That isn't a model for success. Musk's gang doesn't work under those terms.

Adam Smith said, “The average university is a sanctuary in which exploded systems and obsolete prejudices find shelter and protection, after they have been hunted out of every other corner of the world.”

I was older than most students at my university, I had been in the military, had a full time job, a wife and a child.
One day in a class at summer school the blue angels were in town and the instructor made a disparaging remark about them and military in general.
I raised my hand and was recognized.
I told him and the whole class “I’m paying good money to learn the material you are supposed to teach us, not hear your liberal BS!”
The class was visibly shocked!
“We can go to the university’s president’s office and discuss this if you wish”
Everyone was even more shocked!
Most my classmates did not know me as I did not live on Campus. Nor did they know I was nearly at the top rank of Boeing electronics technicians. Technicians that daily worked with billions of dollars worth of aircraft and had to deal with
constant oversight of the FAA, pilots and our own company.
The instructor quietly changed his tune.
I got a C+ in the class, I was normally a “B to A” student.
I had pissed off a student grader. My private university was a “straight line” grading system for all classes, but some material that were more subjectively graded. eg research papers.

.....Most Harvard Students Do Not Feel Comfortable Sharing Controversial Opinions in Class, Survey Finds......

Having been educated at MIT (undergrad) and Harvard (PhD), and having served as a faculty member and research center leader at another great university, that makes me very sad.

Since I worked in the sciences (biology/biochemistry) and in biochemical engineering, the pressure to confirm to leftist opinion was not as great. However, I believe that even in the sciences and engineering at Harvard, the pressure to stifle conservative opinion is still very great.

Part of the problem is Harvard Admissions. They need to admit more students from conservative areas of the USA, and fewer Third Worlders. It is the latter that make the antisemitism problem as well. And there is probably a much less publicized anti-Christian problem, too.

Many Harvard people would probably call me a bigot for these views, but a little of this kind of “bigotry” would help Harvard very greatly.
