'I've spent more than £3,000 on Jellycats'
BBC ^ | 02/09/2025 | Charlotte Edwards

"They are just so cute and cuddly," the 36-year-old software specialist from Surrey says. "There is something so irresistible about their happy little faces!"

Amanda is one of a rising number of adults buying toys for themselves.

And it's not just Jellycats, it's also the likes of Lego plastic bricks and Sonny Angels dolls filling up TikTok feeds as people post videos of their latest purchases.

One in five toys and games is now bought by over-18s for themselves, according to toy industry research group Circana.

The research found buying collectibles had positive mental health benefits that helped adults cope with turmoil.

From eggs with faces to smiley coffee cups, the Jellycat craze has made a big impact on the toy industry and a TikTok trend for unboxing Sonny Angels has put the tiny dolls in high demand.

These toys don't necessarily come cheap though. Jellycats range in price from £11 to over £700, while Lego gift sets for adults can cost as much as £730.

...

As well as just selling the toys, Jellycats has started putting on pop-up "experiences". Currently at London's Selfridges you can buy exclusive fish and chips soft toys, sold to you by an assistant pretending to fry and put salt and vinegar on your selected teddies.

I would not call this a new trend. People have spent way too much money on stupid “collectables” for decades. To each their own.

Growing up is now optional.

Stay in mommy’s basement and play with your toys and yourself.

The world will be populated by real people who go outside, meet other real people, and reproduce.

looking at the bright side, these are exactly the type of people we DON’T want reproducing. “forever young” no longer means what it used to mean. told all the kids when they left home “since we don’t have a basement don’t even ask”. worked so far.

I feel the same way about guns.

I’m obsessed by Chinese dramas and I’m trying to remember
one that DIDN’T have stuffed animals all over the woman’s home.
Here, they’re collectibles and enjoyed by enthusiasts. There,
they’re just part of the culture that every woman owns, and
some men. They’re slept with as a matter of course, and
animal pajamas are also common. When you’re wondering at the
difference between American and Chinese culture.

It’s a sure sign of how bird-brained women are, no matter the culture. Stuffed animals, children’s toys, collecting juvenilia…tell me again how women are “leaders” and “strong and independent” again?

Also, referring to yourself as “obsessed” by this or that reeks of lefty TikTok insanity.

Guns retain value (as long as they’re taken care of). Try selling beanie babies, a beer can collection numbering in the hundreds or aChristmas display. You’ll see how fast that market evaporates when you need to sell it very fast (like when you’re moving).

I guess I’ll have to assume you’re a lefty since you denigrate people, definitely more a lefty trait than one on our conservative side.

LOVE Chinese drama. Haven’t watched American TV since it went woke. Chinese drama has the morals of American 1950s TV with the technology of the 2020s. Guess you’re into liberal TV. Each to their own.

So I also assume you have no hobbies. Collect nothing. And spend your life looking for liberal, lefty projects to join.

Making negative jumps of logic about other people just allows others to make negative jumps of logic about you. Kindness to others allows people to recognize someone’s innate kindness. It also brings greater happiness into someone’s life to assume good intentions and see that things that don’t injure other people can be a source of pleasure.

I’m sorry for your inherent unhappiness. Hope things get better.

I buy video games now and then. To each their own.

The only game I buy is the Civilization franchise. I bought Civ 6 a few years ago, but didn't like the format. Still playing Civ 5, like the mods that go with it.

Later this month, I'll buy Civ 7. If I don't enjoy that, I'll drop back to Civ 5.
