19-21 year olds?
Well, they can choose their sex at age 4 so what’s wrong?

Should only take 5 minutes tops.

Peter Gibbons : The thing is, Bob, it’s not that I’m lazy, it’s that I just don’t care.

Bob Porter : Don’t... don’t care?

Peter Gibbons : It’s a problem of motivation, all right? Now if I work my ass off and Initech ships a few extra units, I don’t see another dime, so where’s the motivation? And here’s something else, Bob: I have eight different bosses right now.

Bob Slydell : I beg your pardon?

Peter Gibbons : Eight bosses.

Bob Slydell : Eight?

Peter Gibbons : Eight, Bob. So that means that when I make a mistake, I have eight different people coming by to tell me about it. That’s my only real motivation is not to be hassled, that and the fear of losing my job. But you know, Bob, that will only make someone work just hard enough not to get fired.

Bob Slydell : You see, what we’re actually trying to do here is, we’re trying to get a feel for how people spend their day at work... so, if you would, would you walk us through a typical day, for you?

Peter Gibbons : Yeah.

Bob Slydell : Great.

Peter Gibbons : Well, I generally come in at least fifteen minutes late, ah, I use the side door - that way Lumbergh can’t see me, heh heh - and, uh, after that I just sorta space out for about an hour.

Bob Porter : Da-uh? Space out?

Peter Gibbons : Yeah, I just stare at my desk; but it looks like I’m working. I do that for probably another hour after lunch, too. I’d say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work.

They’re just listening for any social justice words. Probably have an algorithm on their laptop searching a giant data base for lexicon.

I’ve spoken with numerous state employees in Forida who can’t give you a twenty-word elevator pitch on what their job is. Ask them that and they’ll recite what they do in a day; check their email and respond, get coffee (seriously, several told me that) go to a meeting or two, then have lunch (another common “task”) and then they’ll write a memo. Governor Bush, GWB’s brother, interviewed all his reports and fired a number of them who could not tell him what their job was.

In my career my actual job changed a lot. Periodically, I sat down and wrote an elevator pitch should anyone ask me. I didn’t want to sound like a state employee simply because what I was doing this week wasn’t what I’d been hired for.

15 minutes is enough time if you ask the right questions. I’m not so sure those young geeks are the right ones to be asking those questions.

Ok, yes, anyone should be able to explain what they do and why they aren’t dead weight in 30 seconds.

But reverse the story….if Biden in 2021 hired a bunch of 19-21 year olds to quiz federal employees on what they do for a living, FR would have exploded with righteous indignation.

Almost nobody between the ages of 19 and 21 has the experience, wisdom, or skills to assess job candidates. Yea, there are always exceptions. But in general, anyone who’s been in the workforce for 10-15+ years shouldn’t have to justify their experience to some kid who still pukes when drinking scotch.

It is probably the case that DOGE is playing mind games. And that’s all great fun. But I’d rather they just fire everyone and have them re-apply for their jobs along with everyone else in the USA.

I was a “Bob” in a company I worked for. It was eye opening.

Then I was involved in Mergers in the Banking world. As long as you are on the “right” side of the merger…it was fun. In a game of PacMan, someone is always getting eaten.

This was back in the mid 90’s and early ‘00s. The government has been skating along for a long time. Change sucks if you are not on board.
