The math will become too complex.

Seek government efficiency elsewhere, lil’ dogie...we NBCs love us some pennies.

What will we call penny loafers?

Also, isn’t finding a penny also tied up in getting lucky? Are you planning to ban good luck?

Canada and Australia didn’t have pennies when I visited.

They should start making paper currency in larger denominations. Start with the $200 bill. In a couple years introduce the $500 bill.

It’s ridiculous to have the largest denomination be $100 when it now is worth what a $10 bill was worth in the 70s.

YES! The WORTHLESS penny. I throw them away! (Now that Trump is in charge I can finally admit it).

It would make room in the cash drawer for the Dollar coin or 50c coin... wait a minute, are those even still in circulation?

WAIT... does anyone still use cash? I do, occasionally, but I NEVER carry coins! The only coins I keep are quarters which I use playing Euchre on Tuesdays. Pennies, I throw away, nickels and dimes I drop in my wife’s jar. (This close to also throwing them away. No, I’m not rich, I’m on SSI.

Maybe they could use the extra space in the register to store their piercings in while working? EWWWWWWWW!

I use pennies all the time, and 95% of all my transactions are cash.

I was a coin collector when I was a kid,

Those old dimes - - - are over $2.00 today.

And a $5 roll of them - - - $100.

“The US Mint in 2023 reported it circulated around 4.1 billion pennies. In fiscal year 2024, the US Mint said in its annual report that the US penny costs about 3.7 cents to produce and distribute, up more than 20% from the previous year.”

So, producing pennies costs about $150M per year, in round numbers. I’m not sure we’re going to put a dent in a multi-trillion dollar deficit focusing on nickel-and-dime issues like the cost of making a penny.

There’s two kinds. Mostly copper, and plated zinc.

The copper ones have over $0.01 of copper.

Like nickels with over $0.05 of nickel.

much of it was probably just recovered from my own pockets.

..There used to be half-pennies..

I did not know this! If cash registers routinely showed that half cent people would want that half penny. Get rid of the nickel too and you can simply shift the decimal over .

I live in a sales tax free state.

My main objection to this is it’s another step towards a cashless economy where government controls your ability to buy and sell.

A nickel costs 11 cents to make. Get rid of them too!

85% of transactions outside the hood are via CC/Debit and need no rounding up. Give an Nickel, Take a Nickel appears. Nothing left that even costs .50 cents below the counter. My stint in retail, Even in the 1990s we did not bother counting out drawers to the penny, we dumped them and pulled a rack of 100 for the setup unless it was apparent that they went +/- 300 pennies and ate into the margin of fat/short 3 dollars. 3 weeks after pennies are gone, we will be talking dollar and 5 dollar coins.

A good proposal.

Cut out everything wasteful to get to a balanced budget. Especially NPR and PBS.

The typical price for a half cent is over a hundred bucks now! Stop making pennies and the price will rise! (Nickels cost 11 cents each so stop making them too).

That’s the whole problem: If you DON’T start with the little things, they turn into the big things being complained about.

Start small, and keep growing the solution, rather than just giving up by saying “Oh, it’s too minor to worry about.”
