California’s wildfire recovery faces political challenges in Republican-led Washington

WASHINGTON — With President-elect Donald Trump about to take office, federal aid to fire-ravaged Los Angeles has already become entangled in a partisan political fight in Washington.

The disastrous wildfires are some of the most destructive and expensive in American history, underscoring the need for sustained funding for continued recovery efforts. But House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) indicated Tuesday that Congress could be setting up a potentially long political battle for continued relief funding, based on California’s liberal leadership during the disaster.

“If [California Gov.] Gavin Newsom and local leaders made decisions that made this disaster exponentially worse — which it appears there were — should there be some consequence of that?” Johnson said to reporters Tuesday. “Why should people in other states and other governors and other mayors — who manage their water resources and they manage their forests so much better — why should they have to take care and compensate for bad decisions in California? I’m not saying we’re going to leave anybody out. We’re going to take care of our responsibilities, but we may need to think carefully about safeguards.”

Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, who was overseas when the Palisades fire broke out, have faced criticism over their leadership during the wildfires. Los Angeles City Fire Chief Kristin Crowley said...

They will find a way to steer the narrative to blaming Trump.

BET ON IT.

Nope.

No federal money until California restores basic Civil rights. Free and Fair elections. Voter ID, Signature Verification, Databases to prevent multiple votes, and Illegal Aliens excluded. They don’t want to do this, no money

This is in another category from earthquakes and hurricanes. It is political, preventable, and attached to budget items that are already being run by that state govt.

And if they get Fed funds, they will misspend that money and learn nothing from the experience.

So the Fed response must be that of parents who have stupid adult children. You’re on your own.

Trump has the upper hand. The people will have to hear what he says. Rats can’t handle the truth. An earthquake or tsunami has to be figured in for the future and Calif. isn’t paying attention.

“House Democratic leaders — especially the Californians whose districts are affected by the fires — called Johnson’s suggestion “outrageous.””

Of course. It’s always outrageous to suggest that there be fiscal consequences for a lack of common sense in spending... and to recommend inflicting rules, regulations and restrictions on that spending. Ironic, since the radical left are usually so ‘fond’ of regulations and restrictions and red tape.

I think Ca should get the same package as was offered to NC, SC and Fl after their natural disasters.

The entire state of California is controlled by Democrats top to bottom and yet the WaPo finds a way to make the delays and screw ups about those evil Republicans.

Probably some money for disaster relief would be appropriate along the lines of Florida and North Carolina:
1. toxic material search and removal $30/residential property
2. asbestos inspections $30/property with residence or larger structure when required by federal law
3. firefighter overtime at $40/hour
4. general aid to one former resident at $750/residential property occupied under written lease at time of evacuation order
5. debris removal pickup money as per historic precedent

All subject to FEMA review and approval.

California’s wildfire recovery faces political challenges in Republican-led Washington.

California Democrats — especially those representing the areas decimated by the wildfires — bashed Johnson for politicizing the disaster.

There are consequences for voting Prog Socialist/Marxist Democrat.

Sometimes your children must endure your choices.

Your children may consider that when they supervise your elder care.

“wildfire recovery”

The first step probably is to shut off utilities to burned properties.

The second is to remove downed power lines.

The next probably is searching the burnt properties to remove dangerous non-asbestos toxic items like propane tanks, oil in cans, paint cans, Ni-Cd batteries, etc.

Here in Florida, we got:
1. food handouts
2. water handouts
3. tarp handouts
4. debris pickup

The first two would not be necessary since 98% of the stores in LA are probably still operating.

A few people might need tarps. They can be ordered by the homeowner from Amazon.

Here in Florida, we had a lot of fly-tipping along the service road near me and US41.

In California, debris is probably best picked up from where it lies instead of being hauled to the curb.
