In a move that will undoubtedly hurt American energy independence, outgoing President Joe Biden has imposed a sweeping ban on offshore oil and gas drilling in most federal waters. This latest decision effectively shuts down vital energy resources, pushing the country further away from energy self-sufficiency. Despite soaring gas prices and growing calls to increase domestic production, the Biden Administration is doubling down on its progressive green agenda at the expense of American workers and families. Critics argue that this ban will stifle economic growth, jeopardize jobs, and leave the U.S. even more reliant on foreign energy sources.
Just hours before Congress met to certify President-elect Donald Trump’s election win, Biden issued an 11th-hour executive order that bans oil and natural gas drilling on 625 million acres, or larger than the states of Alaska and Texas combined, of coastal and offshore waters in the U.S. However, the Trump transition team called the move “ridiculous” and “political revenge.” Trump vowed to “unban it immediately” upon taking office.
“I am taking action to protect the East and West coasts, the eastern Gulf of Mexico, and Alaska’s Northern Bering Sea from oil and natural gas drilling and the harm it can cause,” Biden said in a statement. “My decision reflects what coastal communities, businesses, and beachgoers have known for a long time: that drilling off these coasts could cause irreversible damage to places we hold dear and is unnecessary to meet our nation’s energy needs. It is not worth the risks.”
The lame-duck president claimed that the so-called “climate crisis” is growing and threatening communities across the country. Biden added that his anti-American ban would result in a “clean energy economy” that would protect “our children and grandchildren.”
Incoming White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt called the move a “disgraceful decision” on Biden’s part. She said that when Trump takes over the White House, he will “drill baby, drill” to make gas prices affordable again.
Just a few months ago, outgoing White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre promised the American people that Biden had no interest in an oil-drilling ban, insisting that he “was 'focused on securing America's energy independence.”
Off shore windmills cause more damage than off shore drilling. Why not ban windmills?
Unfortunately my energy provider, Dominion Energy, is going whole hog into the Offshore Windmill Scam .
What a waste of money and resources
Government subsidies and mandates usually work against the best interests of the people.
If something is really a good idea, it won’t need subsidies nor mandates. People will take up whatever it is all by themselves, if it really is in their best interests.
During the lobotomy they’ll have to drill though Joey’s skull.
Wow! He out assholes himself everyday!
Because that would not hurt the US economy, which is the goal.
Obama and his ilk are in charge, and Cloward-Piven is a thing.
Banned for 2 weeks
So he used an EO to do the ban, imo the law in question cannot make an EO permanent, he can counter it with another EO, ride it out to the SC if heeded, force the issue.
I get the law empowers him to do this but EOs are the sole perview of the current president, one EO cannot be used to bind a future president, that violates the seperation of powers if you allow a congress to write a law enabling that.
Biden is such a nasty, petty, vindictive little prick.
As the Lamest of Lame Duck “Presidents” tries to screw the entire country, not just Trump, yet again.
And the worst president in history.
At least one pundit said today placing the order by Biden is one things but it will take courts of appeal and higher over a period of months to reverse the order.
The Demonic Dems always have the dirty deeds figured out.
Like I’ve said an APPROPRIATE response to this move by Biden would be for Trump to PERMANENTLY ban offshore and onshore wind turbine installations, along with solar farms on federal land.
Give them a taste of their own medicine, for once.
If I remember on Biden’s first day he cancelled 24 of Trumps executive orders so maybe Trump can cancel 124 of Biden’s on his first day.
When granting the permits to drill, the Trump Administration should include a penalty if the permit is later revoked e.g. forcing the government to pay off the estimated value of the oil, plus the costs of improvements to drill, plus the employees pension contributions and severances etc.
This is how Democrats do it. They get an NGO to sue the Dept of Justice for something or another, and the DOJ settles the case with a consent decree that they will never do it again. That makes it difficult for future Presidents to change the regulations.
This is just another BS effort by the administration to castrate the ability to petroleum retreival. But it is going to get into some problems as the Submerged Lands Act (SLA) of 1953 was the first to define stte operations. A good article here is this:

The feds are over extending into intrastate commerce and laws that keep them from it. Without new laws, as done in congress, the administration is bluffing to go after ecology calls. They can get stonewalled and when Trump comes in, he just erases the unlawful effort.

2025 may break 2024’s all time record for American oil production.
